Do you shop at Walmart?

I don't shop at Walmart anymore. And I feel guilty that I ever did. After learning how unethical and immoral their business tactics are I have a really difficult time even walking in there. This decision is very new to me and makes quite a difference in the way we shop. I was just wondering if anyone else feels the same way??

I don't mind shopping at wal-mart for some things. I know that I for sure won't be buying a cake from there anymore. I ordered a spongebob cake for my daughter's 8th birthday and thought that it turned out gorgeous until it came time to eat it. We found the corner of the frosting thing in it and a piece of hair. I was so disgusted after that. They thankfully gave me my money back, but that shouldn't of happened to begin with. I don't understand how you can get the tip in the cake batter when that is for frosting and you don't do that until after the cake is cooled down. The only thing that I really get from there anymore are things for my cat or chinchilla. They do have some cute clothes for girls, but when it come to a boy there isn't crap there. I have found some cute things there, but that have fallen apart after the first wash. I am by far a Target, K-Mart, and Kohl's shopper. I will go to other stores as well, but try to avoid wal-mart as much as I can.

I shop at wal-mart for certain things. If I can afford to buy it somewhere else then I will. I am a big target shopper and love getting a lot of stuff from there. Wal-mart does have cute clothes, but there has been a lot of times that I will buy something from there and after the first washing it fell apart. I had got a birthday cake from there for my daughter's 8th birthday and it turned out gorgeous, but wasn't so gorgeous when we started eating it. We found the corner of the tip for the frosting bag in there and a piece of hair. I was so disgusted after that. I WILL NOT buy a cake from there again. The only things that I really get from there anymore is my cat stuff and some things for my kids. I have never realized how they treated their employees. That is just horrible. They keep that up and they aren't going to have a business.

As if everything I mentioned were not enough to keep me from setting foot in there, they are bad for the trucking industry as well. They have such rigid rules about timing on unloading trucks at their docking bays, that truckers have to show up way earlier than they should, and then just wait around for hours (we know time is money, and they are sitting around not making money elsewhere) until it's their turn to unload, because if they are fifteen seconds late, they are refused and they can't unload, keeping them from making their next connection and hauling their next load. Walmart has lobbied to allow truckers to drive longer hours on our highways in order to get to their stores when they want them there, making drivers all over the country less safe driving with overtired truckers on the roads.

There are many things that Walmart does that do not support their employees, but they are also terrible for the whole world economy. I stopped shopping there when I learned that they make partnerships with suppliers that kill the partner companies, then they toss them aside and move on to the next company. They put Rubbermaid, Huffy (bikes), Zenith (t.v.s) and a bra company whose name I can't recall, along with hundreds of other "Made in America" American companies, out of business with their tactics. They cut the prices in the stores, they force the supplier to cut the price Walmart pays them - Walmart never ever cuts its own profit in order to bring customers low prices, only the manufacturer/supplier's. In the case of Huffy, Huffy was a well-known American bike maker. They had several lines of products that they made for several different distributors and retailers, from low/medium end, to a special high-end bike they sold to real bicycling enthusiasts. Walmart approached them to make a low/low end bike for them. Huffy retooled a small handful of their machines to make this low end bike, keeping several other machines available for their other lines. Then, once they got that setup going, and had already forgone some of their other outlets for selling some of their other bikes, Walmart insisted they cut their cost to Walmart, and increased the number of bikes they wanted. Instead of saying no - as Walmart was the number one retailer fifteen years ago, and they thought the contract was important - they retooled a couple more machines to make the bikes, knowing they had to make that many more to make the same profit they'd already been getting - since they had to cut their price and profit on the bikes they were currently supplying Walmart. This practice continued and continued, until Huffy found themselves dropping all other lines, selling their design for their top end bike to another manufacturer, and dedicating all manufacturing to their Walmart line. When it continued further, they found themselves working people longer hours, and then eventually laying people off that they could no longer afford because Walmart kept making them charge lower and lower prices to them for the bikes. In the end, Walmart drove Huffy out of business, along with the other companies I named. Their practice is the same with all of them. And this is how they bring you lower prices, while maintaining their unreasonably high profit margin. And this is why they use Chinese manufacturers now, because they destroyed all the American companies they dealt with (and continue to do so, with companies like Levi's at this time). They drive retailers out of business on Main Street, and they drive manufacturers out of business behind the scenes. And they still employ practices listed in this thread of only putting 100 of their products at lower prices, of abusing employees - locking them into buildings, forcing them (in more rural communities where employment options are limited) to work 24 hour shifts, paying too low a wage for employees to afford the healthcare insurance Walmart touts it makes available to their employees, and shutting down entire departments (butcher) who attempt to organize into a union to stop the abuses. You think of it, Walmart does it. Bad for manufacturers, retailers, employees, and customers.

Having a large family we must shop where the prices are cheapest, and while I have extended family members who complain that Walmarts cloths are cheap I've had my second daughter wearing all my first daughters cloths from walmart and they've held up better than the stuff my mother in law got from Macy's. I have to be careful that I make sure the pricing is correct, but often I can go and do one stop shopping, especially at the super walmarts where we can get groceries, which is another huge plus. When you're taking four kids shopping and three are in car seats the less ins and outs you have to do the better. I find it interesting that people complain so much about Walmart. My husband didn't work for walmart, but a civil engineering firm, and he was treated worse than people say the employees at Walmart are treated. Union jobs have the best benefits and the most "protection" for their employees, but not everyone has a union job, and for pretty much everyone who doesn't the workplace is horrid. My husband was threatened regularily, talked down to, and told he was expected to work an 80 hour work week if he had to, in order to get the job done, and he was salary, so NO OVERTIME OR DOUBLE TIME. Less than 10 hours after the delivery of two of my kids, while my husband and I are in the hospital, he got phone calls from work and spent hours on the phone because they had some crisis. Anytime we went on vacation we couldn't be more than an hour from the internet because his work would call with some emergency. He was pretty much on call and salaried and made 60k a year and only bennies for himself, and this is after working for them for 9 years. He was their IT administrator and we live in the bay area, so basically we were poverty level, and the average salary of someone in his position is 80k a year. My husband had 15 total years experience in IT, a BS in accounting and business management, and a masters degree in business computers. The only reason he stayed was job security and because its hard to find work right now. He got laid off when the company started having financial trouble 4 months ago, and he's applied to 60 jobs and has only gotten responses from four jobs and is still unemployed. I think at this point those who need work are lucky to have it, and the working conditions, unless you work in government or for union jobs, are pretty horrid. I just would like to present some perspective.

Do you know how many unethical and unmoral things are out there, and the majority of them we don't even know about!!! There are always the pros and cons to everything. You also need to research the good side of WalMart, not just the bad. Thier company creates thousands of jobs...if thier pay is so low, why are these people working there! If Walmart wasnt there, they wouldn't have a job!! I am Pro-WalMart (as if you couldnt tell)

I LOVE Walmart! Without their low prices, I wouldn't be able to afford many of the things my family needs. If you hate Walmart, that is your right, and I respect your decision. B/c of their low prices, many low-income families can afford food, clothing, hygiene products, and medication.

I try not to shop at Walmart! Unless I have an extremely busy week and need to do all my shopping in one day and in one place. They continue to buy EVERYTHING made in China , even with all the products being made with lead and our economy in the negative! Why would they want to give give back to the people that made them billions?! I have come to absolutly LOVE Target, my local grocery storea and farmer markets! When I was on the west coast I shopped at Fred Meyers which is the only store I have found to be comparable to Walmart. How they treat their emplyees is a whole other reason not to shop there. As for the price difference there are so many resources to pinch pennies these days.... it only takes a little effort.

I shop Walmart every week. The prices in our local grocery stores is a LOT higher than Walmart. If I had to shop at them I would need to get a job to make up the difference in price. The focus is always on Walmart but I have to say if you would look at the tags in all stores it's not made in the USA. Other countries will always be able to make things cheaper than the US and big businesses will continue to make sure they make huge profits. I have seen a lot of people shop at Target (myself included) but on the average they are higher priced on a number of items and their emplyees don't make anymore an hour and if you talk to them they hate working there too.

I stopped shopping at WalMart a long time ago. I got tired of buying cheap products for my home and now I only use safe, all natural products in my home. I am able to buy the products on-line, wholesale, so I am saving a lot of money just by not being in the store (impulse buying) and I don't have to worry about using toxic chemicals in my home. I would rather support a smaller company that truly cares about it's consumer and strives to deliver the best products they can than to support a huge corporation like Wal-Mart.

I shop at Walmart..Never did though till 7 weeks ago when I was introduced to a home business that pays you $300 cash and a $200 Walmart for just spending $200 one time and you get $200 worth of free groceries...NO you dont have to get them at Walmart. I agree that Walmart can be dirty at times but in Utah ours are pretyy darn clean and the people are nice. I have heard they have some biz practices that are questionable but I dont have all of the facts. I do know that the employee's that work there are grateful to have employment in this crazy economy. I have received 9 Walmart Cards wirth $200 each and I can use them at Sams Club and I can use them to get FREE Gasoline too! I have received $2800 in cash as well. I can give the Walmart/Sams gift cards away if I want too and believe me when I say that most everyone would be thrilled to get a $200 Walmart card to use on ANYTHING & EVERYTHING in either store or at the gas pump. It has blessed many, many lives and I am so grateful that I took a chance and spent $200 ont time and joined. The company in 12 weeks has over 30,000 people that have joined and all of our lives have been financially blessed. It is not a Walmart company they are just a customer of walmarts. If you want more info or know someone that could use cash and FREE food and Gas or whatever message me I am VERY passionate about this..www,mpbtoday.com/freefood4you...Blessings, Jacque

The big bad secret of Walmart is there are only 100 things that are cheaper than anywhere else. That's all, but they have managed over the last several decades to brainwash us into thinking it's all cheaper. Coupon clipping is worth the time - join a coupon group that compares the sales with the coupon for unbelievable savings. We have a Dillons nearby & by using The Grocery Game, I often save up to 70% on groceries, all name brand and even cheaper than no name brands at Aldis. The key is combining buy one get one with say another coupon of $1 off and it's even greater when it's on sale. I've purchased so many things for unbelievably low prices. The other key is to not "clip" coupons, but file them by week, so when you see a sale on something, you just pull the coupon. Do some internet searches in your area and you'll find you can shop local, never have to enter a WalMart AND have a fatter wallet!

I used to think I had to shop at Wal-Mart to save money unless it was something that was BOGO at the grocery store. I was in the dark! I can go to Publix and get most of my stuff for way cheaper than Wal-Mart and even Target and CVS I can get stuff cheaper! I don't go to Wal-Mart now unless I can't find it anywhere else! Target has store coupons and then you use that with a manufacturer coupon and can get stuff so cheap. They also have personal care and food items on clearance and coupons to match! Wal-Mart has no coupons and apparently nothing else to offer either. Why shop there unless you have no other choice. They never have cashiers actually checking people out either. But guaranteed there are about 15 of them roaming around the store while the check out lines are backed out into the store. I despise to go in there but for some reason it's always packed. How does that happen?

I have not stepped foot in a Walmart store in over 5 years. The poor quality of the merchandise, customer service, & overall shopping experience is not worth saving .10 cents here & there. I am fortunate to have access to the military Commissary/Exchanges. If they do not offer what I need, Target is a great back-up. I also have to add that I love amazon.com. Great selection, prices, & free shipping on most items makes it ideal.

I haven't spent more than $50 in Walmart in the last twelve years (the bulk of that being a car battery on a rainy sunday while broken down near one). At first, I just switched to other departments stores, but over the years, I have made an effort to shop more and more locally, and have found that Walmart just no longer enters my mind as an option when I'm considering where to get what I need. I mean, I don't think, "Oh, I have to find that somewhere other than Walmart," it's more like it just doesn't exist and simply never enters my mind. If you stop shopping there permanently, you'll likely find this will happen as well. Don't think about the money you may or may not be saving, as I think the fact that most people buy things they didn't plan on or necessarily need cancels out what saving there might have been shopping there anyway. But think about the improved quality of many items that you buy in other places.

I live in a rural community without a single department or grocery store within ten miles, and there are four Walmarts within thirteen miles of my house, north, south, east, and west. Yet, I still have no problem driving past them to other options.

I will say, though, that when Sam Walton started the store, the concept was great and the customer service was amazing. The products were good, and American made. He hired pros who knew the items in their departments, and he paid them well. Unfortunately, his grandchildren didn't think his business model was profitable enough for them.

I'm happy I made the choice as early as I did and have never regretted it.

We stopped shopping there about 3 years ago. "You get what you pay for" is true - they have cheap prices because they sell cheap crap (JMO). Our final straw was when there was that peanut butter recall on Peter Pan peanut butter about 3 years or so ago. We took ours back because it was making my kids sick and it was one from the bad batch. They tried to give us an "even trade" to take the same stuff ! NO, I wanted my money back ! It's like they didn't care, UGH ! So since then, I don't care if I have to pay more - and yes, we are on a tight budget with a family our size - the customer service and higher quality products is worth it to me and my family.
We shop the local stores first, keeping the money in our small town (which Unfortunately "W" is invading by the end of this year), and will continue to shop there rather than big box stores unless we have to, and even then, we're extremely choosey about what stores we give our money to.

I am not happiest at Wal-mart. If I felt that a store used unethical and immoral business practices, then I would avoid them also. There are clothing store chains and home improvement stores that I have complained to about an abundance of Halloween decor and lack of Christian Christmas decor. I have complained and not shopped at stores that offer holiday trees and abstain from using "Merry Christmas." My husband and i have talked to different stores that do not keep up with price changes and continue to short change their customers. I have had to prioritize my concerns so that I have a store to shop at. You have every right to shop where you choose and to let a store know that they do not measure up to your expectations. They may try to win you back or give you an offer. i have refused such things and have expressed that my integrity is worth more than that. What happened to quality service in order to preserve customer loyalty? Good luck with your decisions and buying habits. By the way, I discuss things with my children so that they understand what an impact your stand can make in our society.

Mary, we don't have a Sears locally, but it is not far away in the city. But we do have JC Penneys...and I found good jeans and shirts for my son as cheap or some cheaper for school there and at Kohls...and I get coupons in the mail from them and use them...it saves a ton and I get good quality clothes. I also shopped some at Goodwill...I got him a ton of shirts and some new or nearly new jeans...it saved me...and I only had to buy a part of his clothes new...but I shopped around and found some great buys. We have a TJ Maxx here...and I found jeans for $12.99...I couldn't get Wranglers at Wal-Mart cheaper than that the last time I looked...and they were name brands, like Levi, US Polo Assoc. They also carry Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein...and other brands for about $20...they last longer than the no names at Wal-Mart. Don't get me wrong I am a Wal-Mart shopper, but it has not been the same since Sam Walton died...and my family has been shopping Wal-mart since I was a child...we lived in Missouri part of my growing up...my mom always shopped there and at Benjamin Franklins which was also owned by Sam Walton. But, I shop for quality first...I would rather buy better quality that lasts longer than save money on cheap made clothes, that wont last...it only costs more in the long run...cause my son will wear out the knees faster and wear the shoes out faster...and don't get me started on the way the clothes look after you wash them...the twisting seams and uneven shrinking...no thank you. I want my kids to look better than that...and they can for about the same money...if you do it right.

We have Wal-Mart, have for over twenty years here, Target (which I wont shop, have boycotted for years), Kroger, Marsh and Aldi's here...I rarely go to Aldi's because of quality, Marsh is just way to expensive, so that leaves me with Kroger or Wal-Mart...I don't buy meat or very much produce at Wal-Mart...I love Kroger's produce...but we do garden, so I don't have to buy much during the summer. At Wal-mart I get my cleaning supplies, frozen veggies, milk, eggs, cereal, etc...it does save me money...but I will spend the money for better, fresher produce and I don't see much of that at Wal-Mart...I have not been able to get a good watermelon there for 2 years now...everyone I buy is nasty on the inside...bought my last one a couple of weeks ago...I don't think they are using local Indiana farmers here. But I have doing some research and I am going to start buying local produce, farm eggs and do a cowshare for fresh raw milk.

The links below are from news organizations and other trusted sources. You can read these or just do a Google search for "walmart business practices" - there are so many similar links.

a quote from another site, a study on poverty levels before and after Walmart came to a community:
"Wal-Mart stores destroy civic capacity in the communities in which they locate by driving out local entrepreneurs and community leaders"
actually, it had so much good information that here's the link to the study:

I feel that way somewhat. I have been finding out from a relative who is the asset protection agent (security) at walmart that there are a lot of things that go on there that I would not want to accidently get in the middle of with my kids.... Where did you get your information about their business practices ? where I heard it from was not a very reliable source so I took it with a grain of salt but if you heard it from a more reliable source, then I might shop there even less than I do now. I do not like to shop at walmart! I hate it!! It is always crowded and many of the other shoppers do not use even the most common of manners. But I do still shop there somewhat...I get my food there for the most part. I shop a lot of discount grocery stores in Newnan, Ga where I can buy bent cans of veggies for way less than walmart, and cereal in beat up boxes for even more savings. I buy bread at a discount bakery also :)
I would be very interested in learning more about thier business tactics and methods........It might change my decision to still shop with them some, to a decision of none......you never know with out reliable information by which to make a wise decision from :) Thanks for starting this topic !

I shop at my local Walmart several times per week. The service is great and so are the prices.
