I have quite a few friends that work at Walmart. They shop there when they aren't working. For the most part these people say they enjoy working there.
I really like Walmart and their prices. It isn't any different than any large discount store. For example Costco isn't any different. In that when a store can offer such low low prices they cut corners some where. As it has a lot of the same practices that you are concerned with through Walmart. However, these employees at Costco like their jobs too.

All things being equal, we try to shop at small, local, independent stores whenever possible. Even if the price is slightly higher, we will still do so. It is important to support local businesses. There is a higher price to pay for "cheap" and it's not always apparent straight away. There are the immediate, obvious reasons, like quality, and supporting our local economy. We are able to obtain cheap products because we exploit foreign labour. As globalization happens and developing nations catch up to the with employment standards, wages, and standards of living, manufacturing will have to change. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next twenty years. . .

what is the cost of "cheap"?

yes we do. Pretty much all of our groceries and kids clothes plus school supplies comes from there. I know its not the greatest company around but they are cheap and close to me so.. And no I dont feel guilty shopping there

I feel exactly the same way. They are bad for the economy, bad for the military, horrible to most of their employees and a million more reasons why in my blog. EVERYONE disagree's but I don't care.

Nope, I too worked at wal-mart for almost 2 years and after I had my baby I didn't go back. I still shop their and will continue to do so. My walmart in Union City Tn is alot better than most I have been to and it's the only one I will shop at too.

I do and I love it. We don't have a Target where I live and I wish we did because everyone seems to love them. I have 2 young kids and at Walmart, I can get most of the things I need and I don't have 2 pack my kids back and forth from the vehicle 10 times. I don't have any information on what they are doing to disgust all of you and I don't have time to read all of your posts right now so I will have to read up on it later. But I'm pretty sure I will still shop there for now because my fiance is bankrupt and it is cheap and convenient. I have known a few people who worked there and were unhappy so they just quit. Problem solved. If you can't quit because they are the only place that will hire you, maybe you should just be thankful for that.

I'm guessing the Walmarts in my area are different. In Northern Ontario they work around schedules for students and whatnot, half of my friends work there themselves. I don't have time to work with a 2 year old and one on the way that I'm constantly (until late) puking all the time with. So when I do get out of the house I do shop at walmart because everything is in one place and my perscriptions are there too.

not only are they unethical and immoral, but Walmart is the grossest most crowded place ever. I avoid going there as much as possible (although i do once in a blue moon) the people are rude (employees and other customers) it smells bad, and its dirty

That is not true that they refuse to pay more than minimum wage. When the Walmart came to town here my Mum thought about switching over from Zellers where she's worked for years and they were going to pay her $13/hour to start.

I don't feel immoral about it but we too are a non-walmart family. my husband made the decision to stop shopping at walmart because "we were supporting the breakdown of the economy" they refuse to pay more than min. wage and are contributing to increased poverty.

I can't stand Walmart! The way they treat their employees is astounding! My husband's aunt worked there full time (38hrs) as a greeter for 6 years after retiring from the state. She had some unexpected health problems and took a doctor's order to work saying that she had to sit down. Her store told her she had to review her positions' requirements and if she wanted to keep her job she would stand. Long story short, because she wasn't allowed to sit and let her foot heal, she ended up losing her job and her foot! Unbelievable! Btw, they canceled her medical insurance too! It's just food for thought... do you really want to be supporting a company like that?!

I usually shop at Wal-Mart because my time and money are limited. I can find everything in one place and make only one trip. I don't like going there - I have to agree with the comments on the service. Sometimes, I just can't deal with everything - the crowds, the lines, the blocked aisles, and the unhappy employees. It is a relief to have a break froj it once in awhile, but not practical for me to pay way more for the very same thing. I agree that their treatment of their employees is disgraceful, and I'd like to see them clean up their act.

I live in a small town with not a lot of other options and am a stay at home mom with a shoe string budget so I have to shop there sometimes, but I try not to. To all those who think Target is better, they were recently involved in a big controversy for backing a right wing crazy candidate. Be careful who's political career you're backing by shopping for cheap goods.

I have looked into it also, and I was surprised how they treat their employees, especially in other countries! They work in deplorable conditions for pennies..it's so sad because they know what they're doing and they're getting away with it too. And they know we will keep shopping there because prices are low, and the only reason prices are low is because they have a lot of cheap labor and products made overseas (and here), and have little-to-no benefits...thus huge profits. I worked for them for almost a year, and the only thing I liked was the 10% discount.

I don't care for walmart,I was pregnant and worked for them I have to say they where nice to me and worked with me but my boyfriend worked there and he went in and told them 3weeks ahead of time he needed a few days off that they where going to enduce me and they told him that he either quit his job or if he took those days they where gonna fire him.....so I say F*** WalMart and there being all about family.

See I feel the same way about WalMart but sometimes I dont have a choice but to shop there. The other stores in town sometimes don't have what I need and the other grocery store is more expensive! I guess I am wrapped up in their twisted web of awfulness! lol!

I agree that walmart is rude and treat their employees badly BUT they also pay local taxes to help with roads and other projects. They do put money into unemployment and they like MANY employers are cutting hours of "fulltime ppl" due to our lovely prez. and congress making a health care bill that many dont understand. I dont like the new health care plan and I know many other business' doing the samething to avoid paying for healthcare. Yes many of their employees are on public asst. but they are working I have to give them credit it would be easier for them to stay at home and moan and groan and get welfare for 35 months. I mean really shouldnt we support them for putting out the effort! Why punish the empolyees more by not shopping there which means less need for employees and hire unemployment rate!

We call ours Wally World too! Before Walmart came we only had the Family Dollar and Dollar General for buying gifts/household items, so it usually meant a drive to the city (45 min away) for this stuff. We have a Giant and we usually shop there for groceries, but Walmart is where we go for clothes, movies, games, gifts,etc. I know ppl who work there/have worked there and I would NEVER work there! They do treat their employees like crap, but I don't have a problem with shopping there for the most part. I love Target, but cannot get there all the time, plus they also have some unethical business practices that I have a hard time dealing with.

I do as little shopping at Wal-Mart as I can get by with! I shop for my groceries at the local grocery store. I buy all my other household type items online from a wellness store...I earn commission and shopping dollars every time I shop, and I never have to set foot out of my house. The wonderful thing is that I get to participate in the revenue sharing! Wal-Mart doesn't let their employees do that...they put any money like that back into advertising. I would buy diapers and things like that online as well when my children were smaller. I know shopping at our local grocer and shopping online at my wellness store has been the healthiest and best thing I can do for my family!

You know I think it kinda depends on where they build, too. For thier prices anyway. My sister recently got a walmart in her town, and they weren't putting the new movies on that 1st week special of 15.99 or what ever. She's a big movie buyer, so she would notice. Well, the next closest Walmart is half an hour away, so it was kinda dumb that they wouldn't have the special, too. they eventually had to do it, too, after they realized everyone just drove the extra miles for that. Oh, and I was looking for a thermometer to keep at my Mom's there once, and they were 20 dollars more than my local Target store. It was an ear thermometer, and I had a coupon. :) I had bought it at my local Target before looking for it at Walmart. I still wasn't going to buy it for the price they had it at and a 5 dollar off coupon. Though, the Walmart I was in was over 300 miles from my local Target. Also, there are store that won't build in towns if that town also has a Walmart. My husband used to work for Duckwall/Alco, and they just wouldn't open a store if a Walmart was, too, close. They knew they wouldn't make it, and catered to those people who don't want to drive that far. But there are some places where it is just rediculous when Walmart thinks they need more than one store in a town. My mother in-law has 2, both on the same street. Like if people want to go there they will go. Why 2 for the people that don't want to drive to the South/North side of town? And her city is not all that big in my opinion.

Until other store are cheaper I will shop at Walmart I can't afford to be picky. We have a budget of $300 a month to work with and from there I can get that and still have money left over to get the specials at the other stores around me. Walmart are not the only ones out there that are "terrible" they are just one of the biggest so they get the most attention. I am betting there are places people are not aware of that they shop at that do the exact same stuff as Walmart. Not saying that what they do is all right but they do a lot of good too. I have to take the least of two evils, feed my family, or get crappier stuff at more expensive store. My family comes first sorry!

I have had many friends work there, the hours are hell and there are not really any benefits. And unless you are on a level of management then you aren't really shown much respect. I shop there as do my friends, purely because we can't afford to shop target. We don't have a meijer anywhere really close. The only other department stores and such anywhere close are places like Sears, JCPenny, Macy's, Super K-mart, Babies R Us.

The county I live in is known for being a low income county. We have TONS of wal-marts around here because of it, they do it on purpose. I'm not a fan on theirs but they do have some products I haven't been able to find elsewhere. If I could afford it I would not be a walmart shopper.

I may be in the minority here but yes we do shop at Walmart all the time! I do my weekly grocery shopping there, their food is priced great and cheap and have never had any problems with any of it. I can feed my family of four on about $150 a week buying really great, healthy food for all of us, no prepackaged food, all fresh. Their diapers are TONS cheaper, especially if you catch them on sale, Pampers can be $24.95 a box and I stock up and use coupons. They price match to any other local store, so I only have to shop one place, no worry about running around town to get the best price. Here in Canada we don't have a Target or Sams Club, only our local Zellers that is horribly disorganized and ill lit and you can't find a sales associate to save your life. And I think if the employees are being so ill treated then they shouldn't work there! No body can tell me where to shop and believe me, I have been made aware of these issues before. But I do love Walmart, it keeps my kids eating healthy food, wearing great clothes that last and playing with great toys without bankrupting us. Just my two cents.

They don't have a choice but to work there b/c walmart runs all of the other stores out of business. By shopping at walmart, you are hurting your local people because you are helping walmart to put others out of business. You are hurting not only the local business owners, but there employees, who are often teated better and paid more than the employees at walmart.

I know a lot of people who know exactly what that feels like. People started going to walmart instead of our local stores because it was cheaper, that caused several of our friends to have to close their shops, they lost everything because they could not compete with walmarts prices. As soon as the competition was gone, walmart raised their prices. It was okay for walmart to sell a few of their products for less profit for a few months because they have tons of stores to level it out, plus because of their bulk buying power they are able to purchase items cheaper, so when they raised their prices, they made more than enough profit to make up for the few months of low profit.

Walmart jobs to do not support families. More than 40% of their employees are on some form of public assistance because walmart does not pay enough to support their families. Furthermore, they recently restructured their full time policies defining "full time employment" as 29 hours per week, to 32 hours per week, which cut over 300,000 employees from eligibility to join their healthcare plan. Now these single parents are having to work full time, and find private health insurance, or depend on our tax dollars to support their healthcare.

I love Wal Mart! I can get cheap groceries, clothes, shoes, electronics and all kinds of stuff there! It is so helpful when you have a set budget and you need clothes for your kids. Me and my bestie go to wal mart every Friday as a treat to get out the house while our husbands watch our kids. We like to check the newest items and prices. Yes they can be a little ruff at times but I love Wal Mart, I love Target (They tend to have higher prices) I like Kmart and all the places like that. If I can go in and find what I need and get out I am happy!

I agree Britney! I would much rather shop a local owned but there arent any here in our part of Cincinnati Ohio. So therefore it's target or walmart and i refuse to line a CEOs pocket when the single moms & dad, someones grandparents or whatever is forced to work and support themselves. i hate the fact that so many of the door greeters are well past retirment age but they need the income! i will continue to support my walmart employees because some dont have a choice...nowhere else hires ppl in their 70's Target is to good and high and mighty for helping our struggling elders.

My husband hates it. But his best friend and my step-mom shop there all the time. I honestly don't see the point I'd rather spend more money on things like clothes and have them last more then a week. My thought is that if you want to save money shop used. I've never been treated well at one. I asked an employee where something was and they sighed rolled their eyes and walked away. Needless to say at the one near us pretty much only teenagers work there.

not really. i save tons of money shopping there. when i go to a regular grocery store i get not even a quarter of what i get at wal mart for the same price. i get that they treat their employees like crap. but i never plan to work there. so i don't really care much.
