How often should a 5 month old poop?

something you can do if your really worried about constipation is:

brown sugar water: the malassus in the brown sugar actually act as a laxative in babies... use about 1 Tablespoon for 5 oz

OR
Prunes... I wouldn't feed more then 1/2 a small jar (about 1/4 cup) and see what that does.. it only takes about 2 hours for foods to get from baby's mouth to their colin right now

another thing you can do is look at the lable for your baby food jar... if you feel your babe is having some constipation issues try giving him a food that is at least a 2 in fiber on the lable. but remember ONLY ONE NEW FOOD A WEEK this is so you don't overload that little tongue with too many new flavors.. once you've had him on solids for a while you can change it up to every 3 days... but to start go slow...

Or prune nector and water (mixed 1/2 and 1/2 at the very most.. so 1/2 water to 1/2 prune nector) and try and limit it to no more then 2-4 oz a day.

something else to remember.. with the increase in solids sometimes comes a decrease in breastmilk feedings. If your babe is 6 months he should still be drinking up to 36 oz a day from you but you might find that will tapper off and down as he starts eating more cereal and purees...

Hey Synquis,



I'm a new mom too so I know your concern on how often your 5 month old should poop wholeheartedly. We started my now 6 month old son on solids when he was about 3 1/2 months... Kinda had to the kid has hollow legs and eats and eats and eats... LOL



It's quite normal for a babe to change his poop habits after starting on solids.. Or switching to formula from breastmilk for that matter. My son was given 1/2 and 1/2 breastmilk and formula until just recently.



Remember with starting solids that your baby's bowel movements will be a lot less runny then it was when he was strictly on breastmilk. It will start to get pasty and then will start to have a more solid consistancy. so it's bulking up..



Remember the difference between soluble and insuluble fibers. soluble fibers are stuff like aprocots, Prunes, Plums... (soluble in water) and insoluble fibers are actually the fiber that helps move things through the digestive trac.. like wheat...



It might look a little weird but as long as your baby isn't uncomfortable I'm sure things are fine. Our pediatrician said it's not uncommon for a baby once started on solids to actually go only once every 3 or 4 days. If your concerned do call your doctor and have your baby checked out though.

Yeah... Every baby is different but as Brean Bridge said earlier, she is right about how some babies may not even go poop 2-3 days.. Just as long the bowl movements don't look to bad then I wouldnt worry too much about how often your 5 month old is pooping. Now the poop will change all sorts of colors since you are introducing new foods as well so I wouldn't worry about that either but, if your lil one seems to go almost a week without a bowl movement. Especially when still breast feeding.. I would def call your pedricitian...(Cant spell). Now I've also heard of giving a child Apple juice but just be careful when you do. Thanks. I was a little unsure for a while on how often my 5 month old should poop. I'm a first time mom so everything is still a little new to me lol.

every baby is different so how often your 5 month old should poop will vary from how often other babies poop. i cannot stress that enough. with that being said, my pedi has told me as long as baby is consistent, any amount of time in between messy diapers is normal. if baby usually goes every day and than doesnt go for days..... worry. if baby always goes once every 2-3 days.... thats normal too.

If solids are brand new to his diet it can cause this for up to 2 weeks after all solids are introduced so you have a few months yet left of this. I'm sure you get backed up from time to time still when you eat something you normally don't. If he starts showing signs of being uncomfortable do the love rub(you can find it on yahoo) and if it doesn't help use a q-tip with some Vaseline and just put the tip in the bum, you don't have to go far at all. I learned this when i took my first born to the ER for not pooping for a day LOL.
