Help! first time with a sick baby...not sure what to do

My son Jayden is 8 months old and has never been sick before his temp is 38.6 and he has a conjested sounding cough and he is sneezing. He doesn't seem to want to eat much either. The doctors offices are closed for the weekend so I would have to go to the hospital and wait for like 4 hours or more. I don't want to take him and have them tell me it's just a cold and send me home but I don't want to not take him in case it is something more.



I am giving him tylenol and lots of water.

call ur out of hours drs service, speak to either a dr or a nurse practitioner. and dont worry my son didnt drink for 24hours and screamed for hours, soon as we got to hospital he was smiling and laughing with the dr. dont worry, my mum's a nurse and always says if ur worried get them checked out, no one's gonna think less of you. you know him better than anyone. hope he feels better soon. oh and they say nurofen is better once a temp goes over 38.5.

He wont want to eat. The stomach shuts down when you have a temperature so all your energies go to your immune system. He probably feel sick and just wants to drink and sleep as that's the best way he can fight off the bug. Keep a damp flannel on his forehead to soothe him. Make sure his arms and legs are warm but his chest is uncovered (a dressing gown with some trousers on is ideal as you can wrap/unwrap him as his temp changes) and keep offering him fluids. Let him sleep as much as he needs to. If he likes pure orange juice, try and offer him a bit of that because the vitamin C will help his immune system. If you have any rosemary or thyme, you can float them in a bowl of hot water in the room (keeping it well away from him so he doesnt hurt himself) and they help the immune system too.

It was an ear temp and I took it a little while after giving him his tylenol so I know he had a temp so I took him up to the hospital....They told me to just keep giving him the tylenol and make sure he gets lots of fluids and keep a watch on his temp.  It just worried me because he wasn't eating well or drinking his mil either.

Sounds like you are doing the right thing. Does tylenol have paracetamol in it? Paracetamol should help lower his temp. Try and keep his limbs warm whilst letting his chest cool down. A damp flannel can help cool him. If it doesnt go down, take him to the hospital though. Is that an underarm temperature or ear temperature? Underarm temps are half a degree lower than actual body temp so if it was underarm I'd be taking him to hospital now, as over 39 is a very high temperature and could cause him to have a convulsion, which would be really scary for you.
