Hi peeps!

My Aunt said that she packs lunches for her kids to take to school, but she's sure the little buggers are throwing them away! She wanted me to find out of curiosity whether this is a problem with other moms/parents so...

Who else has this problem with their kids, and where are you living? (We live in New Zealand so all school lunches are brought from home, not served from a cafeteria.)

Does anyone have a solution to this madness???
Cheers!

I was going to suggest the same as Michelle - consult with the kids as to what they want for lunch. I am in Australia, and my kids have always had to take lunch too. Because I make lunch for myself in the mornings to take to work, I also make hers at the same time, but I always ask her what she wants. I also consult her when doing the weekly shopping, so if there is something different she wants, she has the opportunity to do something about it. The same lunch every day can be boring, so maybe mixing it up a bit would help.

I live in the States and my daughter got the chance to take her lunches while I was still married to dad. She could not stand the school lunches because they were so bad. Greasy, pre-made crap basically. She came home starving one day because she had the school lunch and the chicken nuggets to her were not cooked all the way through.

Does she ask her kids what they actually want for lunch?
How old are they?
My older ones make their own lunches and my younger one I always ask what she wants. I don't have a problem with them being thrown out.
I live in Australia so we don't have school lunches either.

I agree with Dove. Don't force the issue, if they are hungry they will eat.

{Just wondering @Ev Witt, do many people at your daughter's school take packed lunches too? What's it like in the States - do many kids opt to take a packed lunched instead?}

Here the schools have a lunch room and offer both breakfast and lunch. There is a lunch program offered that can get families reduced or free lunches based on certain circumstances. When I was married to my kids' father my daughter was in grade school when I did her lunches for her. She took them and got the school lunches back and forth until that day she came home talking about undercooked chicken nuggets. A lot of the time she did not like what they had either and would only eat the things on the tray she did like. I could not blame her. School lunches in my day were nutrisious and good to eat. They had flavor and were of good stuff. Today and even in my daughter's grade school days to high school, the schools use mostly processed stuff and just heat it up to serve. They do offer salad lines but those lines get closed quickly because they run out of salads. Also if you are on the free menu you are restricted to the main lunch menu and can not get the salads or other offered healthy choices. My son was on the school lunch program and got the main menu meals but they offered the main thing or hamburgers....he ate the hamburgers throughout school from grade school to high school.

They're 9 and 12 - She has tried asking them before what they want, but they still sometimes throw their lunches away (one has openly admitted that they have thrown their lunch away a couple of times).
