my family doctor once told me, "he should eat what you eat (minus the baby no-no's like honey and peanuts)" so i usually just took a small serving of whatever we were having and stuck it in the blender. and yes, ice cube trays were my best friend for a few months. i found the soft rubber/silicone ones (like the ones from ikea) easier to deal with, especially with fruits and things that wanted to cling to the trays.

Oh, and when we started Kendall on solids, we used Earth's Best rice cereal from the box, and mixed some water with it. We fed her that for about 2 weeks. We did it because we had no idea what we were doing (our first baby), and figured it would be best to go with something "safe", on the shelves. In hindsight, if I could do it again, I would have just ground up some organic brown rice grains at home and cooked that in water and made cereal to feed her. Healthier! :)

Making baby food is best! Especially since the caps on glass jars that contain baby food contain BPA. The epoxy resin used for coating on the metal jar caps (you know, the film-y stuff on the inside of metal jar caps) contain BPA, although at "safe" levels. You can check the actual numbers from a Canadian government study last year here: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/pubs/securi...

Most of these brands are from/in the U.S. too, so I expect our materials and manufacturing process to be the same/similar. Even organic brands like "Earth's Best" jars contain BPA in the metal caps of jars, although, again, at "safe" levels. I need to write a post about the whole BPA thing soon. :) http://www.kendallspicks.com

My favorite recipe was for sweet potatoes. Just wash the potatoes and prick the skin all around with a fork. Then bake it in the oven at about 350 until soft (about 30-45 minutes depending on the size). Then just scoop them out, smash with a fork or blender, and add the desired amount of water for consistency. It is SOOOO easy! You can also do this same thing in the microwave.
My daughter is 2 and I made all of her baby food. I would say she eats more fruit and veggies that other kids we see. A friend of mine was floored when she saw my daughter devour a pile of broccoli.

My lil guy is 5 1/2 months. we started cereal occasionally around 4 months and a couple of weeks ago we started veggies. he really likes the home made stuff a lot better than the jars.

How old is your baby? I started with Kendall when she turned between 6-7 months old (she's 15 months now). Like the others here, I also used a personal blender and froze vegetable cubes, among other things. I've just started blogging about the whole thing for my friends (I had 20 friends with babies last year!)...I'll share a lot of baby food ideas we've tried, so take a look. I'm on the topic of "breakfast porridge" now. :) It's so good that you are making food instead of jarred food. Good luck! http://www.kendallspicks.com

I made the majority of my son's baby food when he was an infant. Here's a good website http://weelicious.com/

Sometimes though, honestly, I would just google "homemade baby food" and sift through recipes on different sites. But there are SOOOO many out there, it's always nice to have a sorta "go to" page. I really enjoyed making it, have fun!

I did the same as Erica- made them, froze in ice cube trays, then put in freezer bags. My daughter loves them much more than store bought (which I do keep around for emergencies or traveling somewhere w/out a means of defrosting, like a restaurant). They are easy. Most just require the fruit/veggie and some water. Fun, easy, and I hear that kids who eat the homemade baby foods often eat fruits and veggies better as they get older. =)

I loved this site! I use our blender instead of any fancy food processors and it worked just fine. Also, I froze baby food in Ice Cube trays then put the cubes in freezer bags. They last up to 3 months! It's a lot of fun in my opinion!!! good luck!
