I know I've seen this question before, but I wasn't to that stage yet. My daughter is 28 months old and self initiate potty training. She has already demonstrated that she can hold her bladder and make it to the toilet. I thought, "well, perhaps this potty training isn't so bad afterall!". But then I realized that she's actually bringing me a diaper to put on her when she needs to do number 2. Then, she'll do that deed and come and let me know she needs a fresh diaper. Tonight at a restaurant, she let me know she needed to pee. First time for her to pee in a public restroom! But before the dinner was done, she pooped in her diaper.
Just as a side note, someone advised me to empty the poop from the diaper and flush it in the toilet explaining that she can just sit and poo in the toilet instead of the diaper. And I've bought her a toy that I she's seen and I told her she can only play with it once she poo-poos in the potty. She's dying to play with that toy, but it has not worked as an incentive yet.
Also I tried the panty thing, but she treates it like it's a diaper and pees through them. (Once, she actually sat on her potty chair and peed through the panties!) She's actually had more dry diapers than dry underware. On days we stay home, she also runs around without a diaper and she's very good to tell me when she needs to go, never had an accident that way. She'll bring me a diaper if she's got to go poo or if it's her nap time.
