With my kids and grandkids the earliest foods were steamed veggies mashed with a fork. I also would make a lot of homemade soups, mashed up and added baby cereal to get the consistancy right. They got all the nutrients plus as the got used to the textures you can make the chunks bigger to encourage more chewing.

I have a 2 year old and I babysit a 1 year old. I just went through this a couple months ago. When Callie was 10 months old, we gave her steamed veggies and steamed apples cut into pieces and lots of pasta. Sweet potatoes are great since most babies ate that as baby food. Peas and Cheerios have been an excellent food to let babies try to pick up. Cheerios are just the right size to pick up and dissolve in the mouth. Shredded cheese or cottage cheese is always a hit. Anything small enough for the baby to swallow without choking. As they get teeth and mash food easier, start giving slightly bigger pieces. Mix foods and add spices like cinnamon.

Just try giving him sticks of steamed vegies, toast fingers, banana bits, nice soft things that he can pick up to try himself. My son's 8 months and I started finger food around 7 months. He chokes a little still sometimes but maybe once/twice a week coughs but knows how to bring the piece up or will swallow it. I try to give him what we have for dinner (if we have meat and 3 veg - he'll have a piece of steak to suck/chew on sometimes or the a bone we may have thats safe, mashed potato, mashed pumpkin, little cubes of steamed vegies and chicken...he's eaten cottage cheese, cheese sticks, fruit pieces (esp. pear), he loves yoghurt, cruskits with a thin slice of cheese and much more. He eats very well, but I think only because I let him try all kinds of foods. He also has 5 teeth too so not sure if your lil man has teeth? It's all about trial and error. There are alot of good websites that tell you what he could have at his age which might help :-) I know I am constantly looking up what to give him or new recipes.

is it because you started baby food late? maybe. and he just doesnt know how to chew. or doesnt want to? it may just take some practice. we started feeding my daughter table food at about 6 months old, because after having a bite of mommys refused all baby food.

have you tried soft foods. pastas, and stuff. my daughter was able to eat pastas at 8 months with no teeth. and now being 1 they are her favorite!! :) also as weird as it sounds i keep banquet tv dinners in the freezer for her. theyre easy to make, they have all the veggies and meat and starch all right there, and the meat is sooo soft that with no teeth she could eat most of it, obviously in small bites. good luck!!
