OK I mean your in 6th grade just entered middle school there is no way I'm getting you an I phone. What are you guys thoughts about this would you purchase a I phone for your 11 year old? How old is to young for this?

I'm almost 35 and I don't have an iphone. My thoughts on anything w/ 'bells and whistles' is... not til they are paying for it themselves, but I still have the authority to take it away til they are 18.

My girls will be getting (most likely) a cell phone next summer when they are 10.5, but it will be the most basic, cheapest option I can get w/ no texting/internet/anything and only a few numbers they can call or receive calls from.

Australia, Sherri.

I actually just looked it up. But it does depend where you buy them from. Just remember, we have import taxes and GST, as well as the costs of freight here. It DOES cost more to purchase electronics in Australia. And no, we can't purchase many of these things online from overseas because they are often not unlocked, and aren't designed to be used here.

But really, I guess its all relative. What I paid $89 for for my son, you would probably only pay $40 for. I see $89 as a cheap phone. You can't really get much for cheaper than that here. But we also have higher wages. As I said, its all relative.

I didn't buy my phone outright, I have it on a plan and its included in the cost of $59 a month.

When they a ) don't work so can't pay for it themselves b) at 11 they will most likely lose it break it or have it stolen. I probably would NOT purchase one for my child unless i had money to burn.

not a chance would i agree to letting my 13 year old step daughter have an iphone. me and her father completely objected to her getting an ipod touch for her birthday but her mother got it for her anyway.
i wouldnt trust her having unsupervised access to the internet. that is just asking for trouble.
your 11 year old has a cell phone to call people. why does she need it to do anything more! she just wants it to keep up with the jones. and because it's cool

The new iPhones are about $700 or so.....
You can get other smart phones (eg. Android), for the latest models in the stores, you are looking at around $500. Definitely not needed for a kid. I think I paid about $89 for my son's first phone. And it was just a phone. There's no way a 12 year old needs all that other technology on a phone.

I personally think that it's ok for a twelve year old to be to have a phone, I would maybe discuss with her about getting a more satisfactory phone. If you think that it's ok for her to have an Iphone then go for it but if I were you then I would preferably wait and maybe introduce something a bit more affordable, something like a Nokia which is great to start with. I wouldn't ban internet though, sometimes it's good to have internet and know what's happening around the world, just ban some unnecessary sites. Hope that this helped.

Well I personally think it's ok, but maybe discuss with her about getting a more satisfactory phone that can have internet but maybe ban her from going on unnecessary sites. I highly agree that a twelve year old can have a phone, but maybe wait on the iphone. If you agree with getting her an iphone then go for it but if I were you I would allow a twelve year old to be have a more reasonable phone, it can be a smartphone, perhaps something like a Nokia is a great start, possibly when she's a bit more responsible or a bit older, hope this helped.

I had the same problem with my son recently with the Iphone and all of his friends having one! UGH!! I told him I cannot pay for the Iphone. If he wants a phone similiar he can pay for it with all of his birthday money. So I did find at Walmart a cell phone from straight talk that has verizon service and you are under no contract which I love! It has unlimited talk, text and data for $45.00 a month with a card that you purchase and download with a pin number. The phone is a very nice one! A samsung Optism showtalk I believe? It was $200.00 and he paid for it. It also paid for service till Christmas. So at Christmas time when he gets money, he will buy more service for the phone. It is his responsibility to keep it going. I am a single mom and just simply cannot afford it. But the phone itself is very nice and he is very very happy with it. He is in the loop with his friends because they all have the data pkg. on their phones. But this is a less expensive way of having the Iphone. Good Luck!

I think ya answered your own question...this is my issue too. But no way does my 11 yr old need a cell (anymore than her older half-sister does...not even breaking/losing them stopped the crazy grandma from replacing them) Ok how resposible is she? Does she go places with out you..that she would Need the phone to call you back?? Good luck (been hearing mine ask it a few years now) so our kids are TOO young..even in this day & age I think

My daughter is 12, we only got her a phone when she started 7th grade since she started riding the bus. It was the cheap one and she can't even text on it but to us (her parents) or grandparents. It's not for fun.

When she goes to HS she will be able to do more on the phone (based on attitude, etc.) like texting but I'm not spending money on a fancy one. We have an itouch for the family and kids to use...that is enough. Can be used when she is done with things and I know when she has it, can keep an eye on the use.

My niece gets phones all the time passed onto her. One was an iphone. It lasted all of 2 months before she shattered it and was onto the next phone!

When she is old enough to pay for 1/2 of it and responsible enough to have such a phone, probably more like 15 is when I would let my daughter get one!

Depends on if she is in sports or anything but agree she doesn't need an iPhone any cellphone would do for a way to keep in contact with her if she's gone away to sports. My oldest niece is 14 now and has had a cellphone since she was 12 but then she is in hockey and so is he brother, also he dad is a vac truck operator and away at work for months at a time so it was more for her mom to keep in touch with her when she had to catch a ride to hockey with a friend, she now has a blackberry and has an iPod touch. If your daughter only wants the phone for the games get an iPod touch or iPad as they have the same apps as the iPhone.

i plan on getting my kids some kind of mobile when they go to high school, so they would be about 12. because they will want to start to be more independent, and a phone gives them that, but i can still contact them. atm my kids are 3 and 6mths

I don't like the idea of kids having mobile phones, mainly as they are an easy target for someone to mug them to get it. However, when my daughter goes to high school, at age 11, there's a chance she will have to go by bus with friends rather than me take her. I will probably get her a mobile phone then, but with very strict rules to go with it, as I want her to be able to get hold of me if anything happens. However, if I am able to take her to school myself (e.g. if the school has a breakfast club so I can take her before taking my 2 younger daughters to their school) then she won't have one!

When they can get one by them their self. I think the only phone a kid should have Is one of those cheap phones where with limited min. and the parents put in certin number and it's used as an a emergency phone that's what I had when I was little and thats the only kinda phone my kids are getting.

I say no. My two year old used our old iphone for the apps but as far as being used as a phone, I don't think either of our kids will have anything with all the app options. I say the most basic phone is all they need. The main reason I took away the iphone from my two year old is because he would get on to youtube and watch Cars videos but then watch "related" videos and you click that too many times and you're watching who knows what...and he's only two! Think about what an eleven year old could get into! I say no way jose, and not just the fact that they cost so much!

She is getting to the age were she wants to be dropped off at the mall with friends, who all have cell phones 2 in the group I phones. But other than that no other need for a cell phone.

Does she need a phone? Any after school activities that she might need a phone to call for a ride when she is done? Does she have to walk long distances to school or from the bus stop? If she needs to have it for safety reasons then you would have to set ground rules..
A friend of mine has a step-daughter that is close to the same age they bought her a phone had rules set with the knowledge that her phone would be randomly checked to make sure she was following the rules.
She ended up reading text messages that were in appropriate as well as pictures of her in her bra and underware she was horrified. She lost the phone and I have no idea if she has gotten it back. It is a lot of responsibility for a child at that age unless she "needs" it then it should wait till she is older and is driving/could pay for it.

I didn't have a cell phone until I started driving. That was so my mom felt safer. I didn't have text and had limited access to who and when I could call someone on it.

I would say that until they can pay for the plan and phone themselves they are too young. iPhones are way to expensive to just hand out. You might as well throw your money in the trash. I would bet that after a week of having it; she would lose it, it would get stolen (most likely), or it would break.

No child NEEDS and iPhone. a plain old ordinary phone, I can understand. My son has had a mobile phone since he was 12 - he purchases his own credit (it is a prepaid phone only). But an iPhone? Totally unnecessary, and I would also say, it probably WOULD get lost or broken.

As far as I know Disney mobile no longer exists. But places like cricket have a $10 phone that basically makes calls and texts. I think t- mobile and Verizon have prepaid phones that are that basic also and places like target and best buy still sell bottom of the line basic prepaid cell phones.

I don't know Emma... I haven't actually looked into it. ;) I 'think' there are kid phones that you can program w/ only certain numbers and nothing else, but... I don't know how cheap of an option that'll be. Due to certain circumstances I REALLY want the girls to have a phone by the start of next school year. I just gotta watch the cost and don't want anything that I don't feel they are ready for.

I would have to agree with the others. If they can't pay for it themselves then they're not ready for it. I worked with kids for 10 years before I had my own. All I can say is I saw way too many kids who lost really expensive phones etc that they were not responsible enough to have in the first place. Having a job to pay for it, paying for phone and plan are both great exercises in responsibility . Besides at 11 or 12 they just don't need it. A basic phone for emergencies sure. IPhone's no way.

[deleted account]

I'm pretty much in agreement with the others. I do want my kids to have some sort of cell phone (with a simple plan) when they are old enough to be out on their own. But if they want more than the most basic phone or package, they will have to pay for it.

Until she can afford it herself she's too young. If you want her to have a phone or she needs a phone in order to keep in contact with you or for emergencies then there are lots of phones that do just calling and there are some that are set up so you have a set of phone numbers (you, grandparents, emergency contacts, etc) pre-programmed into it and those are the only numbers it will call.

I don't think kids really need a phone before high school or college unless they are getting it as a safety precaution for emergency situations.
