I started my 3 with seating position. As they got more familiar with the routine, then they graduated to the standing position. I suggest using a stool when they stand so your floor doesn't get wet.

I taught my eldest son to go to the toilet at 2. He started standing straight away. He had a little stool to stand on and I told him to point his doodle into the toilet. He was always fine and loved being a big boy. He was completely trained day and night within a month of turning 2.

my son mostly sits on a toilet with out the potty seat and i get him to close his legs and have no problems with 'holding' his penis down or tucking it down.

I had a little trouble getting my eldest to use the potty. I had him sitting down on the little chair and he didn't really like it. The second that he was old enough to stand (2 1/2- ish) he started liking the potty and honestly only had 1 (daytime) accident after that! Based on that experience I would say standing. (Although- he's now 4 and everytime I clean the bathroom I find yellow around the base of the toilet!! I don't expect that to go away for some time... lol)

Both of my boys (12 years and 5 years) were taught standing. They always followed their daddy in the bathroom and watched him go standing so it almost seemed natural for them to start that way. Try it out both ways with your son and see which one he feels more comfortable with. Good Luck!

When I worked in childcare at the local hospital we taught the boys to sit when they were first learning to go on the potty...you do have to tell them to hold it down or do it yourself until they know what to do. After they get the hang of going to the potty for a while they will eventually want go like a "big boy" on their own and stand up to do it.

I started by teaching them to sit backwards so they don't pee everywhere. You also have to remind them to push it down, or hold it yourself. Eventually they will want to be like Dad and stand up to do it, make sure you have a step stool so that it actually goes into the potty. Another option, especially if small child, is to have them sit on a potty chair then transition to the toilet.
