As a stay at home mom I have 2 problems, 1 money is tight! 2 I want to de-commercialize the Holidays...my kids are so spoiled and always want more more more!
Anyway, I feel like giving up and getting everyone I know starbucks gift cards...help!
Anyone have a cute idea to make or do as Xmas gifts for friends and family?

I had ideas like:
-homemade bars of soap
-framed photos of the kids for family
-maybe a donation made in their name (we like to give money to compassion international, $100 will -buy a family a cow or goat)

One fun idea for all ages is the TickleMe Plant Greenhouse. It it you can easily grow kids favorite plant the TickleMe Plant. It is called the TickleMe Plant because it acts like it is being Tickled when you Tickle It!
The leaves quickly fold together and even the branches fall down.
Has to been seen and grown to believe it is real!

HI, I think homemade gifts are the best, they are truely from the heart. I made a photo calendar for grandparents one year with a hallmark program and they loved it, every year since then they have asked if they could have another for christmas. Also photo quilts are inexpensive, I just bought fleece blankets and then copied the pictures on iron on paper and then transfered them. I do daycare and last year I had the kids paint on canvas for their parents. Have fun. I am also doing alot of homemade gifts this year.

thanks ladies! you were all so helpful!
For all my girlfriends and extended family women:
How about coffee mugs with different flavors of tea packets and sugar all wrapped in plastic wrap tied up with a nice ribbon and a cute craft type tag.

I have young sisters (pre-teens) I LOVE the idea of the movie night bucket for them! I could get HSMusical on DVD, popcorn, cheese popcorn seasoning. Any one know of other movies good for 9-12 year olds?

you could make homade ornaments or keepsakes to ornaments(sp) with hand and/or footprints and names and decorate them up. You can always laminate them to have them keep longer, as a keep sake you can buy a cheap tile piece from menards for like a dollar and do foot prints, instead of having it be left then right, do the right foot first then the left, and with bottles of paint, like fabric paint or anything else you prefer you can turn the feet into butterflies and decorate them and around the and put the child's name on them (also depends age of kids) just some ideas

I love doing bookmarks- a photo of your child(ren), let them decorate it, and self-laminate it. Cheap and everyone always needs a bookmark! Mini-scrapbooks are great for parents too! We bought my (3 yr. old) son a plain wooden treasure chest at Michael's (with the 40% off coupon fromt he paper.) I am going to paint it black and my husband is going to put a latch on it- he will be wild about it! Perfect for stuffing with any of his toys- total cost, about $11!

My parents told me they didn't want anything for Christmas because they are in the process of de-junking the house and we are tight on money since we just had a baby and they cost a lot of money! So, I ended up making them a small 8x8 scrapbook of a trip to the Smokey Mountains we took this past June. It was very simple and ended up costing half as much as I would have spent on them buying regular gifts. It's a keepsake they can put with their photo albums. I know they also would like anything that has to do with our new baby - photos, a footprint mold (Hallmark $8), extra time with them, etc. - all of which don't cost very much at all!

My kids and I are putting together little gift bags for everyone this year. One of the things we are going to do is get some cheap little votive candle holders and I will have the kids draw on them with glue sticks then roll them in glitter. Another idea is to make ornaments using felt, sequins, beads, pipe cleaners, etc...

I have done the movie theme basket for my family and it was a hit! I just bought a gift card at the movie rental place for like $5 and put some popcorn and candy and cokes in a bucket and wrapped it really pretty. They loved it! We are also making our kids presents this year and we came up with building our girls a barbie house out of an old 3 shelf bookcase we have had. We are decorating it with wallpaper and stickers and my husband has made some barbie sized furniture. Also, Craigslist.com is a great source to post that you need things. We posted that we needed furniture for Barbies and have gotten alot of responses. Alot of our stuff we have gotten, like new, for free! It is also really fun to see what we can come up with!

Oo! I'm so glad you asked as I have recently been "researching" this very topic. :o) I've found some super-fantastic websites that you should check out. There are some WONDERFUL ideas that should be pretty simple/easy and fun to make! Here you go: http://sewmamasew.com (my fave!), www.craftzine.com, www.readymade.com... plus, the site http://www.buyhandmade.org/ has a bunch of links to check out (including a couple of the aforementioned)-- not just stuff to buy! Have fun!!

Last year I had a couple of kids to buy for and my boyfriend and I made them these wood plaques with their names on them. We just went to the dollar store a bought some paint, round wooden plaques, and wooden letters. We painted them in whatever colours and then glued them and a picture of the child onto to the plaque and then finished it with a clear laquer. They looked really cute and we also drilled a hole into the back so they could be hung on the door or the wall.

another fun idea is a theme basket. You can do one for a movie at home night. Fill a basket with things that you would want or need for a flick. You can get a couple of dvd's, some popcorn, gift card for a few rentals, and you could use a popcorn bowl to put the stuff in. You can do a girls night in basket or baskets for children. I would be curious to know what ideas you try! keep us posted! :)
