There's a chain message going around on facebook that means to say "mothers are awesome and they should feel good about themselves" but actually says "giving up your identity and sacrificing things you like is the best way to love your child."

It's part of a weird competition I've noticed among certain mothers. Giving the best to your child is no longer sufficient to win a "mommy war" now you have to take the most away from yourself, too.

What do you think about mommy wars?

Motherhood does involve alot of sacrifices, some which cannot be avoided, as we give up our very bodies to our children during pregnancy and nursing. But to sacrifice all the things you enjoyed before you were a mom is probably the worst thing you can do to yourself and your kids! A mother who gives up hobbies, exercise, make up, cute outfits and nights out with other adults becomes a miserable person who has lost her identity and often these women end up resenting (whether conciously or not) their children. In order to care for others, we must take care of ourselves first! A mom who takes time to exercise (thank God for jogging strollers!), continues her fave hobbies, and gets some grown up time with their spouse and friends can come home to their children feeling refreshed and ready to conquer another busy day. Kids don't always have to be left out of these activities, as I hinted above, my jogging stroller is the best thing I ever bought! I was a runner before I had kids and still am today; now I just bring them along! We aren't just moms, we're individuals with interests and valuble ideas, our kids just add more complexity to our existing identities!
