I was sitting at a traffic light earlier this morning and just happened to look in my rear-view mirror to see a mother with TWO of her children strapped in the FRONT seat!!! The children looked to be around 2 or 3 years of age. I couldn't believe it! A note to all mothers: Please, strap your children in a car seat in the BACK seat....and never put them up front unless they meet the age/weight requirements!!!!

I agree with you, Emma, Rebecca & Sarah. Sometimes people need to be judged. If you are blatantly breaking the law and clearly endangering children, that is so definitely one of those times. This is NOT just a "parenting" decsion. It's not like choosing breast vs. bottle or CIO vs. co-sleeping. Grow up!

Ok, all I was saying is that moms/dads should be more careful. I'm not judging anyone....and about my other posts, I was only stating what I saw....Kate, this is NOT grade school....please go be childish somewhere else. I was only giving my opinion on the matter, nobody has to take my advice or whatever, if you don't like something I posted, then don't read it, don't even click on my posts to begin with. I am soooo sorry if I offended you....it's ppl like you that have that 'drama queen' attitude and don't even care about the real matter at hand....I was talking about CHILD SAFETY.....and I believe, imo, that all children should wear a seatbelt....and be in the back until old enough to be in front. Anyway, I agree with most of you ladies about parents being a little less careful these days....I think they just don't think sometimes, and yes we are all guilty of forgetting things sometimes, I'm one of them...but when it comes to safety, that is something I practice diligently.

I was driving on the highway the other day (a day after we had our huge winter storm with 12'' of snow and ice on the ground) and a car flew past me and all I saw was two little kids standing up in the backseat! I was thinking wow seriously! It's icy outside, your speeding around AND you're kids aren't buckled in!?! I really wish I could kick some sense into those parents.

That is awful to put a child that young in the front seat without a car seat, however my car is designed for carseats in the front seat. It has a weight detector in the passanger seat and if your not over a certain amount the airbag will not come on. Also, the weight detector is also a shape detector, if anything shaped like a carseat is putting weight on the seat, the airbag will not come on. I actually had a computer sitting in my front seat aat one point that was well over the weight amount but since it was shaped like it was, the air bag would not come on. I am still worried to put my kids in the front seat though, but its nice to know my car has those features if i ever had to. But we should not say this woman was a bad parent. allthough it was a crazy move!! It is not our place to say she is a bad mother, simply because that was just one thing that she has done. Even if we saw a parent yelling, cussing, and all sorts of stuff at their child, it is still not our place to say they are a bad parent. I'm not taking up for her by no means, but i am saying we should not judge people. Weather we know them or not, there is no excuse to judge someone and put them down. Its just wrong and unkind. We can feel sorry for the kids, we can do something to help the kids, but we should never say harsh words towards or about anyone. About their actionsw, yes, about them as a person, no. Im sorry if i offended anyone by my opinion on judging people, and i want to stress, I AM NOT TAKING UP FOR THIS WOMAN BECAUSE OF HER ACTIONS, but i just believe judging is just as wrong as what ever it is your judging for.

Many sportscars don't Emma. Some don't even have back seats of course. However, they all have clearly marked labels and instructions to inform people that small children (I think the age is 10 and under) should not ride in the front.

If your car can not hold children in proper restraints or child seats, buy a different car or don't use one at all. If you do not value your kids enough to follow very very basic safety guidelines, They're in big trouble. And yes, it does make you a bad parent. It means you are breaking the law, that you are committing a crime. The police will at minimum write you a ticket, and in some places, they will take your kids home until you can prove that you have proper child restraints in the car. They may even call Child Protection.

Kate, your posts are absolutely ridiculous, and yes, I am judging you.

Kate, no one said anything about being a super mom. Doing things like that is not a mistake, it is ignorance. It is common sense to know that a baby or young child needs to be in a car seat in the back. Parents like that need to be caught. I definitely would have called the police.

My kids don't even go to the front door of my car. They know better. My youngest will be 6 in June and she still rides in a carseat. My husband and I were at a traffic light the other day and he pointed out the car in front of us. 3 kids in the back climbing all over the place. None of them could have been over 3 yrs old. A few years back, I went back to my home state to visit my parents, driving down a backroad, a car going about 80 passed me. I saw in her backseat, her 6 yr old daughter and the toddler she babysits! Neither strapped in. How do I know the ages? I know the girl! She was driving to her husband's work to spy on him....with kids in the car!! Some people

But in the new vehicles some come with the correct LATCH connections and the switches.I have a 2002 Isuzu Rodeo and Mine doesn't have the switch so my son def rides in the back but on e friend has a newer one and does have it.I am almost 5'10 and she is 4'6 it is much harder for her to drag a set out from the back and not fall with baby than it is to have her in the front.Plus it is totally legal. No it is not my personal preference but I am not the kids mother. She has the right to have the child in the front by the laws own law.

The cars now have a control in the trunk or the glove compartment that can turn the bag on or off.It kills the power to the switch that signals the bag. They have been in the newer vehicles .http://www.google.com/search?q=airbag+sh...

Kate, no we're not super mom's, but not following simple safety guidelines can be the difference between life and death. Children under 12 should not be in the front seat of a vehicle, because the air bags can kill them! You need to be vigilant about proper car safety, I don't see how this makes people mean, or make them think they're better, it's not rocket science to ensure a child's safety.

I always see stupid things like this. In my area alot of parents with throw an adult in the back seat and set their kids in their car seats but wont strap them in. Then when they start driving the kid will get up out of the car seat and start playing around in the car. They dont care either! They just let them go.

Being a medic in one of the busiest cities in the world, strapping your kids in the backseat makes my job easier. I have had many discussions with people who haven't strapped their kids in at all and then wonder why they go through the windshield. Use extremes for people who don't listen to the safety requirements. Yes back in the day kids still went through the windshield. If the world wasn't full of stupid people I would be out of a job.

That is absolutely ridiculous! My oldest is 8 and I don't let him ride up front with me unless ABSOLUTELY necessary. And honestly, if I know I'm going to have stuff in the way of him sitting in the back then I just wait and either have my hubby stay home and watch the boys or send him out for what I need. I can't just let the boys sit unsafely in a car, it will just eat at me.
I've heard about moms back in the day not using car seats, my mom said the same thing to me about letting me sit in the back seat for a long drive, etc. But the thing about that is, 15-20 or more years ago, yes they didn't have car seats, but honestly, there wasn't traffic like there is now. Our population has grown so much over the years and that's another reason why they are making carseats safer and cars themselves safer.
I've seen my fair share of people in cars letting the kids either go buckwild in the back or have an older sibling just hold them. I absolutely hate it, what if there was an accident? That poor child will be through the windshield in record time! When my hubby and I see these things we do call the police, as to what comes of it, I don't know. And as much as I'd love to do something about it, my dad's words keep coming back to me: "You can only save your own." It's irritating after awhile, but I know he's right. All I can do is make sure that me and my kids are safe and educated about the safety/danger there is out there.

I'm due in May with our first and i'm pretty sure my in-laws already think I'm a bit "over protective" ;-) because of the things I'm not eating/keeping away from and the types of things we've registered for - trying to go as eco as possible with everything, planning on breastfeeding, etc. And of course my MIL says "Well I didn't breastfeed and he's fine (my hubby)" and tells me horror stories about the old-fashioned cloth diapers she had to deal with so I shouldn't want to use cloth since I could use disposable. Well, yes, maybe I am being "paranoid" about chemicals and such, but my theory is "If there are other non-chemical choices why would I choose something that MAY hurt my child's health?!" Plus we had to go through IVF - in-vitro fertilization with an egg donor - in order to get pregnant so yeah, i don't want anything to jeapordize this pregnancy!! We would've loved to have several kids but this lil'guy may be our only.

And then I see things like what you saw - Parents that don't seem to care about the safety of their children and I just want to smack them!! Especially when I think about all the people out there who would make great parents (but can't afford fertility treatments or to adopt). We have friends who after 10 yrs have given up.

Sorry to be so long-winded, just a sensitive subject with me ;-)

I always have this argument with my parents. They always tell me, that "when you were little, we just put you and your brother in the back of the station wagon and let you guys play with toys. You guys loved that. I don't know why they make you strap your kids to a seat for car rides." My reply is always the same "My kids are safe!" I felt absolutely awful one time, because I had no other option than to hold my 3month old on my chest while trying to rush her to the ER. We (including her doc) thought she had croup, and one morning she started a coughing fit, and couldn't catch her breath. We thought of calling an ambulance, but it would have taken them at least 25min to get to our house (We live in the middle of no where) and we knew we could drive her to the hosp. in 25 min, but every time I tried to lay her in her car seat to go, she really started coughing even harder, so I held her upright the whole way to the hosp. I don't know how mothers willingly, and continuously put their kids in a car without being properly restrained!

I hope you called either 911 or non emergency...? I sure the hell would have! All you have to do is pull over, make the call, tell them her license plate number, try and get the make and model and let them know the direction in which she is traveling. I have done it before! An officer called me back and asked me if I was able to see where she still was and since my sister was driving we were able to follow her, gave them the exact location we were at and they came and pulled her over and I'd assume at least gave her a ticket.

I saw a car full of people with 3 older kids sitting in the back seat and the kid in the middle was holding a baby in his lap. Might have been a year old. No restraints whatsoever. I pickjed up my phone to call, the police only to notice no plates on the car. Some people do not need to be parents. I would do ANYTHING to protect my daughter and you have people like that.
