My 2 1/2 son isn't potty trained yet. He holds his poop in until he gets in the tub.

It's not so much that he's "holding his poop" but the warm bath water stimulates his little bowels. J's doctor told me to put him in a warm bath when he was constipated, and it ALWAYS worked. A lot of kids don't realize they need to go, then when they get in the bath, they suddenly have to go. Just let him get out and poop. Eventually, he will start to go before he gets in because it's not pleasant for them to sit on the potty soaking wet and cold.

Eventually, the sight of the tub will stimulate the reaction that the actual water naturally does--Like Pavlov's dogs. Do you remember his studies? He would ring a bell then give them food. Getting food naturally stimulates the dogs' mouths to produce more saliva in preparation for digestion. After a few weeks, when he rang the bell, the dogs would start to drool, even if there was no food coming. Same with our kids. They will start feel the impulse to poop even if they don't soak their bottom, they just have to see the tub.

Mine had to be in a dark and quiet spot - he used to go hide behind the couch! Or wait till he was in bed with the lights out and door closed. So I started watching him and would get him to the toilet as soon as I saw him headed that way - or would stand outside the bedroom door for 30 seconds, then open the door and say, oops! we forgot to go potty! He wasn't trained till he was 7 (special needs kid) but you just have to keep trying. They'll get it eventually! :)

my son used to do that too, and it continued on through out his life even after he was potty trained every time the kids butt hit the water he had to poop! he is now 6 and its funny i was just saying to him the other day "remember when you always had to poop during your bath" lol needless to say it passed. as i am sure it will for you. potty training is tough but moms are tougher! keep your chin up!
