My son was 11 months old when he had hernia surgery. I was so worried and I think I cried all the night before. It ended up being so simple. I don't know if your daughter is going to a children's hosp. or not, but I think they are the best, because they know how to make children more comfortable. They explained everything to us and they didn't even start an IV on my son til he was already unconcious from a gas they gave him. It took about 45min-1hr. I cant remember exactly how long, but it seemed like forever. Then the doc came out and said we could go see him in recovery. We got to leave like an hr after he got out of surgery. We were told that he could be sleepy the rest of the day, but he was up crawling around and wrestling with his older brother that same night! They didn't even need stiches where they went in at. All they used was a steri strip.

First off, I was 5 when I had a Hernia Repair. I recovered quickly. It is much easier on the smaller ones, than if she had it done as an adult. My 4 year old has one, and will have to have surgery. He also has DS, so it's not uncommon. The only reason his isn't fixed yet is because I'm a chicken when it comes to knocking my kids out. It scares me to death. We are waiting and getting his teeth and his hernia done at the same time so he will only have to be put out once. Good luck with your daughter, and Best wishes.

i can't offer much advice as i've not been in this situation myself! but my brother had a hernia when he was about 5 and had surgery on it, i was onlyng myself so don't remember much but i know he was back on his feet pretty soon after as it's quite a common procedure!! He recently had another one repaired (he's 26 now) and he was in and out the same day he needed a few days rest from work but was up and about in no time!! I hope it all goes well for your daughter!
