It's quite possible that they could come in bunches. My daughter showed signs of teething starting at about 4-5 months, but didn't get her first tooth until she was 15 months. She is 21 months now and has 9 teeth that are cut through and out completely, and about 4 more that are coming in. If your son hasn't actually had any of his teeth come through the gums, I would have your doctor check - my doctor told me that if they are showing signs of teething and don't have any teeth actually make it through their gums by 18 months then they need to be looked at to make sure that there isn't a problem (some kids have really tough gums, some kids have problems with the baby teeth, etc). If you are really worried, have your son checked out.

Baby teeth come in over the next three years. They get their top and bottom two front, then the ones on either side, then their molars start. My DD (16 months) is getting her teeth on either side of the front two both top and bottom and top and bottom molars at the same time. Fun times.
