we moved our daughter to a toddler bed at 14mos. it took a few nights of getting used to but she did great. we started with nap times tryin it out. we got her excited about the big girl bed by letting her help set it up, pick out bedding, and still left the crib up in her room for the comfort of seeing her room pretty much the same.

We just moved our 20mth old to a toddler bed, so far so good. he transitioned nicely, he really needed the space.

Oops, I forgot to tell you I removed the metal bed frame-casters and all. I had the box spring sitting on the floor and not the bed frame.

Ok- I know I am going to get a lot of "static" for this, but here is what I did as I had the same problem. I moved my daughter at around the same age into a full bed. I took the casters (wheels)off the bed-so the bed was lower (bed frame sitting on the floor). I then put guard rails (fully enclosed with mesh) around all the edges of her bed making sure there were not any gaps in any of the corners big enough where she could slip through (I used long ones for the sides and short for the foot and head of the bed). The rails were basically touching on all 4 sides. I ensured the rails were properly intact by following the directions and then shaking on the rails myself to ensure they were secure. I also would periodically check all the rails to insure they were still taunt (as with shaking they can loosen over time). Tust me, I was very nervous at first, but then I thought about it and I thought even if she (God forbid) did climb over the bedrails (which she ended up doing) the fall wouldn't be as high as if she were to fall out of her crib. She is 2.5 years now and the foot and head rails came off when she was 2yrs (they still are on the sides). Currently, I have the bed (head part only) pushed up against a solid wall (wall without windows). The sides rails are still on. I did what I thought was right given the situation, which is all you can do as a parent--it worked for me, but I would advise you to be very careful to insure the rails are very taunt and almost touching on all four sides before placing your little one in the bed. After ensuring all is secure, I put would put your little one in the bed to see what he does. That is what I did with my little one. Hope this helps.

I used to put pillows on the floor by Eddie's bed - that way if he did climb out he would be falling on pillows and not just the floor :-P

IKEA has a wonderful floor bed, that my sister uses for her two girls. I used sleigh beds, but my girls are giants.

My son was about 11 months when we put him in a bed. He would NOT sleep in his crib and I was sleeping in his room in the glider. So I put his mattress on the floor in the corner and put a large body pillow on the open side and he slept wonderfully! I put a gate at his door as well, so that he couldn't get out of his room. After he was doing well on the floor (I think it was 3 months or so) and wasn't rolling off anymore, we moved him to a toddler bed with a railing. Now he is in a full size bed (he is 22 months old) and loves it. Hope I could help you out! :-D

My oldest daughter was 10 months when she went to the toddler bed and about a year when she went to a twin bed. She is 5 now and wants a full size bed. My youngest is almost three and would still be in her crib if we let her. I would recommend a bed rail until your son gets his bearings in the big bed. good luck.

I was thinking of moving him into a full size with bed rails, but it worries me that he may climb out or fall out eventually- he has just started walking slightly and very curious about climbing etc.....let me know if you find a solution!
