Need help with baby falling asleep with sippy

My one year old will not stay in crib without his sippy cup in his mouth. He will suck on it till he falls asleep then he will let it go. How can I stop him from falling asleep with it?

I would first put only water in sippy. Then start by decreasing the amount of water that he gets. Eventually he will be down to having hardly anything in his sippy to drink.
