I'm just curious how long most people stay dilated before going into labor.

I'm almost 36 weeks along and I've been feeling cramping and pressure since yesterday morning but it doesn't come and go it's constant. My family has a tendency to have earlier babies so I'm not sure whether I'll be going into labor soon or not.

With both my pregnancies I dilated early. With my 1st I was dilated 1 cm for almost 3 weeks. Then I had enough and asked the Dr. to strip my membranes and 2 days later I was in labor and had a 8 pound 10 ounce baby! How far along are you?

Nicole, that could be the start of your labor. I had my son at 37 weeks. Just keep a careful watch on it because you may not have any other sign (like your water breaking or any REAL pain) other than the slight cramping. If you ever think that it is the real thing, I would call your Dr or just head to the hospital. They will monitor you at the hospital for an hour or so and determine if it is time or not. I went once, and was sent home. But the second time I went, with just mild back pain, they decided to break my water and I had him that night! Like I said before, good luck!

With both of my pregnancy's I spent between 2 to 4 weeks dilated at 1 cm. I believe my sister in law was 3 cm dilated the last month of her first pregnancy (he was 3 days late). So you can be dilated for a while. I'm sure you're seeing a doctor weekly at this point so go see the doctor and see what they say. If you're having cramping, you may be going into labor.

with my 3rd child i was dialted at 1cm for about 3 months i think. my children are all close so the midwife said i would stay at 1cm because my body hadn't recovered from the previous child.

I was dilated 2cm for 15 weeks before I had my third daughter so It really doesn't matter how dilated you are. It just depends on when that little one wants to come out. Sometimes you can be dilated because of the presser the baby is putting on you cervix.

i read that you can be under 3 cm for a month, sometimes longer. personally, i found out i was 3 cm...that lasted a week. then i went another 4 days at 5 cm before they broke my water. that whole time i never felt any contractions. hopefully it goes quickly for you!! good luck!

My son I was at 3 cm for about 2 wks before I was induced. With my daughter I was at 3 cm for about 3-4 wks before my due date. By the time I went into labor I had been at 4 1/2 cm for a week. She was born 2 hrs before her due date.
