My oldest is starting kindergarten this fall and I looked at her list of supplies that I need to get for her (and the class). I was amazed at the amount of stuff I have to buy!

I;m all for helpping out others who need it,but when I saw the school telling me I had to buy specific brands on things like kleenex and crayons I wasn't too happy. And out of everything I have to buy,the only things that will be "hers" are 1 pair of scissors, and her pencil box. Everything else is for the class to share!

Tell me what you think about a school dictating(in my opinion) what I bring to the "communal" supply box.

I'm looking for honest opinions.

I wasn't saying that I wouldn't buy thses things nor be willing to share. I was trying to state that i didn't understand the qty of stuff. When I was a kid ,mom only had top buy 1 of everything, and we were allowed to keep them in our desk or personal cubby hole. And I wasn't trying to say that I want my kid ,or anyone else's to keep all that we bought them for school-I just don't see the problem with every student hanging on to A BOX of colors-that's why we have to buy so many boxes, right?

But whatever-now Im just rambleing on -sorry. Chalk it up to First kid in school jitters-

Thanks ladies! (:

You don't have to. I was a teacher before being a mom and schools CANNOT force parents to buy anything. Honestly, I didn't have money for extra things (fun stuff) because I spent all my money (legislative $) buying supplies. You can talk to the teacher and decide from there. Sara Hopkins though does bring up some great points.

Wal Mart, Office Depot and places like that often have amazing sales this time of year. Check that out. I think there are even free and penny deals on some supplies.

I know it sounds like a lot but let me give you a teacher's perspective.

80 boxes of crayons may not make it through the year. Think how fast your kids go through crayons at home. If your daughter got to keep her four boxes for the entire school year, they'd be gone by Christmas. I'm not exaggerating. Also, keep in mind that a lot of teachers will take the kids' supplies and keep them in baggies with the kid's names on them. When it comes time for an art project, she'll pass them out, then pick them up again after it's over. This keeps kids from coloring and being distracted during class time.

Please also keep in mind that schools just can't supply everything. What students don't bring, comes out of the teacher's pocket. Teacher's do not get paid enough to supply 20 children with kleenex year round. If teachers hang on to supplies and distribute them as needed, she ensures that the class can make it through the year with what they have. Otherwise, YOU'D be buying new crayons halfway through the year.

Also, school supply lists are made after years of experience of what a typical classroom uses and needs. It's not unreasonable for a classroom to go through 40 boxes of kleenex and germex, especially during cold and flu season. Your child will likely be using her fair share. Yes, another kid will be blowing his nose on your kleenex, but your child will be blowing her nose on someone else's.

Think of the alternative. No crayons, no glue, no kleenex. This is stuff is for your daughter's use. How would you feel if she ended up with the crappy crayons some other parent brought? How would you feel if she had to wipe her nose on her sleeve?

I'm not being harsh, I just want to explain the reasoning behind the list. And don't forget to check all the sales. You'd be surprised how inexpensive it can all be.

let me give u a run down on my kid's supply list, keeping in mind that every kid in her class has to bring the same things....
4boxes of crayola brand crayons(16 count),24 sharpened yellow #2 pencils,8 glue sticks,2 bottles of glue,3 kleenex boxes,2 pump bottles of hand sanitizer,3 dry erase markers,1 box of crayola brand large ,washable markers...along with the regular book bag,gym shoes, and pencil box and scissors.

I got to doing the math today and figured out that assumeing there are 20 kids in her class, and every kid brings in the required 4-16 count boxes of CRAYOLA crayons, that's 80 boxes of colors! For 1 class!! That's 160 boxes all together for morning and afternoon kindergarten-for 1 teacher!!! Then WHY can't my daughter have a box of colors with her name on it to keep in her pencil box that she also has to have? This makes me so angree!!!

I have not had to do that yet but my sister did and I will tell you what she did! She bought the roseart or genetric brand of crayons because she said that if it was for her child she would have bought the name brand but since she does not know who is going to get them then roseart if good enough! She refused to buy what was on the list that she could get in another brand cheaper and they did not say anything cheaper! I have one going to kindergarten and one going to second grade and I love they are doing my children school supplies - they both are taking up 20 dollars from each student and then they (the teachers) are going and buying the school supplies!

Every year since my daughter has been in school they send home a list with specific brands of what they need supplied. I agree I think is absolutely ridicious. I have no problem either sending in something to her school but some of it blows my mind for instants I have to make sure she has pencials, pens, note book paper, folders and so on...( which have to be a certian type and brand) On top the kleenex and other things. The school district we live just built 4 new schools and they can't seem to afford to supply a pencial? My daughter is in 6 grade so I have been dealing with this for quite sometime but it all started in kindergarten..
