My 5 month old daughter has a HORRIBLE habit of screaming/shrieking. She has always done this. She can cry a normal baby cry but chooses not to. It is a ear piercing shriek. I have tried EVERYTHING that you can try with a 5 month old. I need some more ideas! Can anyone help??

It sounds like something in her environment could be causing her some stress. I'd start thinking about where she is and what she's doing when the screaming starts, and see if something in the situation might need changing. Babies that young haven't fully grasped crying if something's not really wrong just to get your attention, it's a signal from them that something is wrong.

There could be lots of reasons for this. She is not old enough to manipulate you for attention. Babies this age need attention.

She may have colic or a tummy ache. Have you tried massaging her?

Both of mine used to cry sometimes when laid flat, but preferred being held upright. A sling or baby carrier is invaluable if she doesn't like being left alone, as it frees your hands for other things.

Haha, I feel the same way! Luckily for me mine is pretty good in the car, if she isn't sleeping she is just talking. She does not like to be left alone in a room though, and the shrieking starts about then. It has really started to test my patience lately, and I hope it does not last as long as it has for you! :( My husband doesn't understand why I want to pull my hair out sometimes when he gets home and why I just need a break away from her! She too is pretty perfect unless she starts to scream like that.

ugh. I did the same thing. at first I thought something was REALLY wrong with her. So I would go in a soothe her. Now I realize that she has complete control over the situation lol and this scream/shriek is IMPOSSIBLE to just ignore. That is what everyone keeps saying to do I don't think that they realize that she does this because it can't be ignored. Especially when she is less than a foot away from me in the car. I'm really hoping someone can help. I've been hoping that this was a phase since she was less than a month old :s. She is a perfect baby other than this one thing lol i know i probably shouldn't be complaining, but i have NEVER heard a baby do this!

My 3 1/2 month old has just started this! It is driving me BONKERS! It started when I was trying to lay her down for bed/naps. She would cry and when I would let her cry for a few minutes, when she was super upset it would turn to shrieking. Of course, I would go and get her then and soothe her. Well, now she knows that I will come if she shrieks so she hardly cries at all! I have started to ignore her a little then too, but now it doesn't matter what it is, she just shrieks. Not sure how we fix it. Hopefully it is just a phase?!
