Anybody else feel like you/your family is sick all the time? My family or I have been sick from right after Christmas until now, most of us twice bc we caught two different bugs. I started thinking and remember being sick the last 2 maybe 3 years as well. I remember because new years eve is our anniversary and we have been unable to celebrate due to sick kids. Also it seems we are frequently getting sick throughout the year, colds or fevers, etc...... I guess I'm just feeling frustrated! I don't take my kids out or around other kids when they are sick but it seems like there's always a parent who thinks its no big deal to do whatever they want with their kids whether they've just been throwing up the day before of have fevers, etc..... I know being sick is a part of life, but I don't want to turn my kids into germ phobics just to get a few months of sick free time.

get your vitamin D levels checked! Vitamin D deficiency weakens your immune system so you get sick more often. When I started taking vitamin D3 I didn't get sick for a year. I stopped taking it for a while because I misplaced the bottle and now I have a cold. I take about 6000 iu daily (because I'm pregnant), 4000 iu when I wasn't pregnant, and 10,000 iu now that I'm sick. My kids get 2000 iu daily. They haven't caught the cold I have :-)

At one point, I was practically like a mad woman disinfecting daily and honestly, it didn't seem to help all that much. To find the extra time in a day to do it and not see noticeable results can be tiring and frustrating. I say do your best and that is all you can do because once again, you can not control everything else outside of your home.

Dilluted Clorox and water for anything that isn't electronic.

That's true, Bonnie. I agree with Jessica about taking Vitamin C. It does do wonders. Has anyone tried that new airborne immune system enhancer?

The only other thing I can think of is used Lysol disinfecting wipes or clorox wipes.

You can clean and sanitize as much as you want in your own home, but honestly, once you have kids who are in school, it is impossible to control what goes on there.

I know what you mean! My crew have been sick since right around Thanksgiving! It seems we were just getting over something when something else hit. I also agree with sick kids. I don't know why parents send their kids to school, daycare, etc when they are sick. Most the time they end up having to pick them up early and by that time they have already spread the germs throughout the group! Very frustrating!

i hear ya! we were sick for two months straight. Nothing we'd tried was helping. I was getting to my whits end then I found this http://drtenpenny.com/VitaminD_info.aspx... At the bottom are the healthy and sick dosages. Within 2 days my sinus infection was gone (Ihad scheduled an appt to get on antibiotics but cancelled it when it cleared up) and my sons cough and runny nose was gone. My friend reported that her son that has DS had been on antibiotics for double ear infection and a sinus infection and nothing was working either. She did this and in three days it too was gone! I also upped our vitamin C. A healthy dose is figured out by adding a zero to how much you weigh and take that amount in milligrams. Example: 150 lbs= 1500 mg, 30lbs= 300mg. A sick dose would be twice that for the kiddos and at least twice that for the adults. Try taking 1000mg every hour until your bowels say woooooh. Then back off to 500 an hour. C is water soluble so you'll pass what your system doesn't use. Good luck momma.

Do you know of a less smelly cleaner? Lysol makes my throat tighten and bothers me, I would need something a little more airway friendly.

Lysol everything. I learned from my doctor that germs can stay on toys, etc. I was tired of everyone being sick all the time. He told me to spray down everything. Once I did, the illnesses stopped.

I understand completely, there is a balance. But you have a 5 yr old, my girls are much younger and they don't have to miss school. I found out after half my house was sick that a family members kids were throwing up the day before the holiday gathering and she never said a word to anyone they had been sick. I think there's a balance and respect for other people you should have. Its not like I get sick for a day and feel better the flu in our house is a week long period bc it travels through our family. I called the nurse at the clinic to see if they thought I should bring my daughter in and they said we likely had the two types of influenza. We are on day 8 of sickness (fever, vomiting, stomach junk, etc) and I cant imagine neglect fully spreading it to someone else to go through. If my husband misses work we lose an income as well that affects our livelihood. Some people get over these things quickly and that's great for them, but not everyone does. I don't visit my grandparents after being sick bc I understand the higher risk when elderly get sick, I just hope for some courtesy from others back. If you're going somewhere fine, if I have a warning and feel there's a risk we have the option of skipping it. I know it's rough-this week we've missed out on at least 4 things we'd planned, but it's not fair for me to make someone else miss their plans and be miserable as well. After 24 hours your risk of sharing probably drops considerably, but recognize there is still some risk and be cautious.

The actual influenza yes Martha just a stomach bug no. Also I am following what my schools rules are 24hrs fever or vomiting free and by law they are to return back to school. Plus if I kept them home for 2wks they would fail school and I could be put in jail for truancy of my child. They are only allowed so many days per quarter.

Sherri - you are contagious for three days up to two weeks after having the flu, you should check this link out:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/stomach...

I know it's rough to avoid ppl, society just isn't set up that way. I do think it's important though to warn any parents of children under 3 that you've been sick and try to avoid having small kids playing with other small kids. Adults have the sense not to share foods and drinks (usually), but little ones are almost guaranteed to catch something if you don't try to contain it. Between sippy cups, bottles, pacifiers and the fact that they put things in their mouths and touch everything. I think it's only fair to give other parents a warning and/or hold off on unneccesary activity for a bit.

My 5yr old has had a cold for 3 wks. He still needs to go to school etc. I am taking him to the doctors tomorrow now because I think it is now a sinus infection.

Also if my kids haven't had a fever or been throwing up for a day there is no reason to keep them home any longer because they aren't contagious after they are contagious before the symptoms hit and during the actual fever or vomiting.

I hear ya. Both my boys have been sick twice throughout the month od December. My 5 year old had a stomach bug that lasted about 4 days and then a cold a week later. My 3 year old had a cold and then two weeks later a cold and an ear infection. My husband had a cold. Then I had a stomach bug and a week later a cold that I am still trying to get rid of.
