How do I protect my children from catching stomach viruses/colds from school?? My oldest 2 are in school and they have brought home 3 stomach bugs this school year and several colds....Does anyone have any suggestions as to keeping them from catching it and spreading it to the rest of the family??? I give them their vitamins every day....and try to give them extra vitamin C during cold season....but they still end up with these 'viruses'. I also use hand sanitizer on them religiously....but at school, I don't even know if their teachers are making them sanitize their hands....or if they are disinfecting toys/desks/chairs. It really makes me angry because I believe if your child shows EARLY signs of a virus, or a cold, KEEP THEM AT HOME!!! Don't send them to school b/c it will only spread to others. I do this with my kids...so why can't other parents do the same?? It makes me feel like they don't care....but I do! I absolutely HATE cleaning up vomit 500 times a night and constantly washing sheets/clothes every time I turn around. So, what are your suggestions?????

I HATE when parents send them back too early. There is no 100% effective way to keep them from catching bugs, but I attach a little hand sanitizer to J's belt loop every day (The pocket sized ones you get at Bath&Body Works or in the checkout lines at the grocery store--they have little holders that attache the the belt loop). I also send Clorox wipes to school every month for the teacher & she has a few of the kids go around and wipe all the desks at the end of the day. I use a rosemary spray on my son's backpack & jackets to prevent lice. You can get it on Amazon for $32/bottle, and the bottle should last at least 1/2 the school year for two kids. To keep it from spreading at home, I spray all of my light switches, remotes, keyboards, and doorknobs with disinfectant every day.

If someone in our family does get sick, I isolate them. Hubs goes to our room, J goes to his room. I have small TV's that we don't use often that I can hook up to DVD players for them to watch, bed trays so that they can have their meals in their rooms, and I tuck them in and get them all warm and comfy so they don't come out. Then I disinfect everything that goes into or comes out of the room. Luckily, there is only 3 of us, so it's never too big a deal to have someone sick, but it still sucks.

Thus far, we've been lucky this year--J hasn't gotten sick or brought any yuckiness home.

Parents are sending their kids back to school to early after the bug this is selfish inconsiderate and some see school as childcare,it is unfair cus sensible parents adhering to the 48 rules and then their children are picking it up again it make me annoyed, one tip for families is drink deep purple welchs grape juice 3 x daily 6 mls it alters the acidity in the gut making it non conducive to the bug no good when u have symptoms though cus your house will be sprayed purple hope this helps regards nicole jay

I wish I had advice for you on this, but I am going through the same thing right now. The past few months have just been really bad for sickness and young kids seem to pick up anything and everything because they have low immune systems. It doesn't help that parents don't keep their sick kids home though.

wow, what language Katherine.....I do understand though. We had the lice thing happen too...except they got a note sent home to check our kids' hair....which they didn't have it, but still, it does annoy me that some parents send their children to school with it and they still send their kids to school when they are sick. It just makes me feel like they don't care if other children get it too.....

My daughter just came down with the croup because some jackass mother sent her son to school with it.
Scarlet fever has been going around, as well as lice.

These parents are sending their kids to school no matter what!!!!

It pisses me off to no end.

I think most of us moms are feeling the pain on this issue. It just gets so annoying when everyone ends up sick...and it seems the moment we get better, someone else starts getting sick again! I try my best to keep everything in the house sanitized...I've even gone as far as spraying the bottoms of everyone's tennis shoes as soon as they come in the door. I know it sounds crazy but what else is there to do??? I guess it's just inevitable. We will get sick no matter what. I even isolate the sick child (when it's the stomach virus) away from the others, but somehow the other kids end up with it too. Our family doc said that it doesn't matter b/c it's likely that the virus is already in their system and won't present symptoms until about 2 days AFTER they've contracted it. UGH, I JUST WANNA SCREAM! It's so crazy how fast these colds/flus/and stomach bugs go around! Anyway, if any of you moms have any suggestions, please share!

I definately feel your pain! We haven't been hit by the stomach bug too much. Just one bad one a couple months ago, and then just a mild case of diarrhea last week. The colds and flus on the other hand are horrible! My oldest is the only one who hasn't been to the doc yet this year. My 5 year old has been hospitalized with pneumonia once and treated for croup once. My 3 year old has been treated for croup 3 times, and my almost 5 month old has been hospitalized with RSV once and treated for croup twice, and just this morning, EVERYONE except my husband sounded croupy (including myself)! We have been to the doc at least once a week for the past 2 months!!! I think I'm going insane. I make my two older ones that are in school wash their hands the second they walk through the door, and I spray disinfecting spray (something like lysol, but is eco friendly and plant based) on everything. I scrub down the house as much as humanly possible, and nothing seems to help. If we go to the store we clean the cart with the wipes the store provides, and sanitize our hands the second we get in the car. I know the kids' school does a decent job of wiping things down, because they are constantly running out of clorox wipes and asking for more, and everytime I have been to the classrooms, there are bottles of hand sanatizer everywhere. If you find the magic cure somewhere, let me know, because I am one wore out mommy!
