Sucking on baby wipes

they want to play with and chew ANYTHING that isn't a toy. i just confiscate them off my son when he starts doing stuff like that and let him scream. meh. and give him a real toy or something else safe like a plastic serving spoon from the kitchen.

I wouldn't let my lil one do it. Some wipes even have alcohol in them. Maybe tell ur son no and take the bag away from him so he can't get into it.

glad you found out that they are safe to suck on. When I see my son sucking on wipes its usually because he was thirsty. So when you see him sucking on it try offering him a drink.

I agree with those that have said not to do it! Also, make sure the washcloth is free of nasty detergents, it would not be any better of a substitute if he were to suck on those chemicals as well!

Even if it doesn't say that Quaterium-15 is in it, don't let him do it, its actually its kinda gross. If he feels the needs to suck on something give him a wash cloth. Even if he screams he has to learn that he can't do that. And you said that you check labels, i do too but between all the recalls we have had with baby products (plastic, sippys, bottles) how can you trust everything that is written on labels??

Thanks everyone for responding! I emailed Pampers directly and asked them about it. I received a call today from them. The woman I spoke to told me they wont harm him if he sucks on them, but not to let him. If ingested they will cause problems. She also emailed me the ingredients and there isnt anything that will hurt him. I even showed his doctor the ingredients. He says the same. Jayden doesnt eat them just sucks on them. I dont let him have the wipes, he steals them from him diaper bag if  he finds it in reach. I've started keeping his diaper bag in places he cant get it. I agree with some of you, there are better things to suck on!. They taste aweful to me! I cant imagine why children love them. Thanks again!!

What is formaldehyde?  It's a preservative "embalming fluid"  Eweeee gross!

P.S.  This preservative is in all kinds of stuff like hand lotion, baby lotion, cosmetics, skin care, baby wash, etc....  Please be educated!

This is very true!

My son loves to chew on a wet cloth, so I stocked up...I keep atleast 4 in the diaper bag at all times.

That just means if he actually EATS the wipe it could cause intestinal blockage or other problems. I don't think sucking on them will really hurt him...but there are bound to be better things to let him mouth.

You're very welcome.  You may want to check other products you use for it though!  I did check the MSDS sheet for these wipes (as I had never heard of children sucking on them, but apparently it is wide spread) and I got this right off of their MSDS sheet online

I dont think there is Quaternium-15 in the wipes. Im really good at checking labels to make sure the things I buy are very safe for my son. Thanks for the link though it was very helpful.

My little boy is 10 months old and I always catch him with them in his mouth. At first I was scared incase they hurt him but he seems ok this doesn't mean I let him do it . I do think it could be because he is teething and they are nice and cold.

i would definitely hid the diaper bag! I think if you just keep him away from them that he'd grow out of doing it.

My daughter always did that. She's 3 now. And my best friend growing up was always told that she did it too. 

I don't know what's in wipes, but I'm pretty sure kids have eaten worse things...

Lots of kids do that. I dunno if I would *encourage* it...but it is kinda normal. I would keep a clean washcloth handy and whenever he gets a wipe out I would soak the washcloth and let him have that instead.
Most baby wipes contain alcohol which may be why he likes them so much if he's teething.

I use to give my son cold washcloths to suck on when he was teething and I would keep them on hand in the refrigerator. I doubt the wipes are harmful, but maybe he would let you trade the wipe for a wet washcloth. At least then you'd know it's only water.
