What age is appropriate for a child to get a cell phone?

Hi Amy. I have 6 children ranging from 22 to 7 and thus far until they have a job and can pay for it themselvers I have not seen a NEED for it. My 2 middle children ages 13 and 12 want them because all their friends have them and well with 6 kids that is not reason enough. My ex husband and I share custody of these two and between him his wife me and my husband there is always someone there for them no matter what. Now next year my 13 year old will go off to another city for high school at which point we are talking cell phone to get in touch with us and so we can find her always....

I think there are phone s for a child to have that only have a couple of number programed in to it. I think it is more for emergencies. I think I would get one of these for my child then once they get a job and/ or driving I would get them a real cell phone.
I think there is no reason for a child to have a cell phone. My kids will get a cell phone when they have jobs and pay for it themselves. If my child needs to stay after school then they have to know what time they will be finished before I let them and then I will show up half an hour earlier. If they start work I still wont get them a phone till they can pay for it and if they need to stay later than the roster said or they finish early for some reason then there is no reason why an employer wont let them use the land line at work. I think it is a really bad idea to give a phone to a 9 yr old who doesnt need one. I think it teaches them that the things you own dont matter, you dont need to work for them. It shows them that they can waste money on things they dont really need instead of spending it on important things. I dont know if Im putting what I feel into the proper words but basically my opinion is its wrong to give a child a phone until they can pay for it.

I think it depends on the child(ren). I have gotten them for my 10 & 12 yr olds. I found that once they started middle school they almost "needed" a bit more Independence. They would stay after for sports or after school activities and would call to let me know and make arrangements to be picked up.
But, they have the totally unlimited plan (no minutes or texts to count), and since I know they use it to communicate with their friends as well, they have to help with the bill. Chores around the house that used to net them an allowance now are going toward their monthly bill. They have to do extra if they want allowance as well.
They do well with it, and always let me know whats going on. That part I like :-)
