Im just wondering what may be an average age for babies to start crawling. My son is 8 months and not even trying yet.

A milestone or average is just a guideline. Most babies will reach a milestone by the set age, but many will be before and many will be after.
My oldest daughter didn't start crawling until she was 9 months. And that was just 'army crawling' on her belly. She did the hands and knees crawling at a year. She walked at 15 months. All that is within 'normal' range.
My five month old is already trying to push up on her hands and knees and move forward. That is also within 'normal' range.

Same as Alecia, crawling at 6 walking at 10, both of my daughters.
***Edit to add every child is different. Not all are at the same milestones at the same time.

8 months is probably average. My daughter was 17 months. hehe. There's a pretty wide range of normal.

my daughter started crawling at 6 months, but then turned around and was full blown walking by 10 months.
