When's a good time to start potty training my 20 month old?

My husband and I have different ideas on how to tackel this new challenge. He tells me the sooner the better which I agree, but then again she hasn't started talking fluently yet, which I think maybe it'll be easier to wait until she starts talking? Or maybe I am wrong? HELP!

For boys the average age for potty training is three and for girls it's two. There are some signs that they are ready. Wanting to be changed, taking off their pants, or telling you when their going. You'll know when she's ready. One day my niece told her mother "I don't wanna wear diapers anymore I wanna go on the potty" and she never wore diapers again. Pull-ups at night of course!

Early is better IMO. Your daughter can understand much, much more than she can say. Begin with just an introduction. Show how you do it. Offer her to sit. Make it fun. Once she is interested and goes a few times then you can try doing what Kenyada explained with the timer and such. If she is resistant don't push too hard and just keep offering the opportunity. Good luck. Typically if you start before 2 years your child will not have the battle of wills issue that so many toddlers and parents go through with potty training.

Thank you so much for the positive input Kenyada! Will definitely start up potty as soon as possible!

Hi Laura,

Even though your baby hasn't starting speaking well yet, don't let that stop you from getting the potty training going. I have 4 children (3 girls and 1 boy) and they all were pretty easily trained. I think it was because I was able to be patient with the process, believe me you'll need it. But my best advise would be to buy your kiddo some training underwear and a potty. After feedings, snacks, and drinks wait about 15 mins and put him on the potty for a few minutes. While he's on the potty encourage him to go by saying, "do you have to potty? Go tee-tee...push".., etc. You can also try turning on the faucet water while he practices. If you commit to doing with baby as often as possible, your baby will begin to show signs of trying to go on his own within weeks. Lastly, a good sign that he's ready is when he/she starts to take off his diaper. Definite sign of potty time.
