This is a silly question but I read in a baby book that once the first tooth appears that you should begin to brush your childs teeth. However, I cannot imagine doing this with a five month old. Please send me your knowledge and thoughts on when you started to brush your infant or toddlers teeth and if you started with an infant, how did you go about this (example, rinsing the mouth).

You can get a very soft toothbrush meant for babies that you can use on their gums. There are fluoride free toothpastes for babies (and toddlers) as well so it is safe if they swallow any. Even still you only need to use a small amount. You can start even before they have teeth.

before my daughter had teeth, i would wipe her gums with a warm washcloth, just so she would get used to the feeling. when she got her first tooth, i used a finger brush, and once she started biting my finger, i got her a little toothbrush. now she loves having her teeth brushed and we do it twice a day, i brush them to make sure its done properly, then she holds the toothbrush and chews on it a bit and brushes them for a bit longer.

You can get flouride free toothpaste that they just swallow, and like other moms have stated try one of the finger brushes. I found my son would just munch on my finger when I used it though, so when he was about 6 months i started him on a regular toothbrush, and he's quite used to me brushing his teeth now at 19 months, although I have to say he's much better for daddy than he is for me!

I personally started brushing my kids teeth as soon as I saw them. They have this little brushes that you slip on your finger and brush them, also there is infant toothpaste that if used in small amounts is harmless and okay if they swallow it. Best of luck!

I was told from several experienced parents, moms and dads, to start brushing/massaging their gums when they're infants with the fingertip brush. This is just to get them used to you putting something in their mouth to make the transition to teeth brushing easier. They have a little scrubber on one side that can be used for once the first few teeth come in. You should definately start brushing that tooth if you don't want it to get a cavity and so that your child doesn't fight you tooth and nail when they have a mouth full of the little buggers. The infant/toodler toothpaste they make is safe to swallow but it is suggested you give them a quick sip of water when you're done, so no rinsing!!!! Best of luck!
