Let your baby tell you when they are ready!
When your baby is ready to start eating food they will automatically become very interested in you when you eat, try to touch your face while you chew to see what you are doing and stare at your food like they really want some. This is nature telling you that their little digestive system has matured and lengthened enough to start eating food. Giving food too early can cause problems, pain as the immediate consequence but also longer term intestinal problems.
Babies get very LITTLE nutrition from food until 12mo as their bodies can not absorb most of the nutrients in food yet. Most of their nutrition still comes from milk. Giving food before 12 mo is about learning how to eat and sensory experience.

We started spoon feeding cereal at 5 months and then started introducing stage 1 baby foods at 6 months. We mixed it with the cereal for starters just to get her used to it. And you can always stop if your baby doesn't seem to be handling it very well. :)
My son started spoon feeding at 4 months old. He ate about a tablespoon of rice cereal at a time. I mixed it with his formula and gradually started adding veggies then fruits. As his appetite increased so did his portions. Just make sure he is still getting his main source of nutrition from breast milk or formula. Spoon feeding him solids should supplement but not replace.
