well with my second and third children the drs broke my water but with my first its kind of a funny story. me and my boyfriend were liveing with my mom just moved in and there was no electricity in middle of summer. well we were all lying around on my bed just laying there trying to not die of heat stroke LOL and i got up and used the bathroom all was normal well as soon as i layed back down next to my boyfriend my water broke and it was a huge huge gush like someone popped 10 water balloons at once. so needless to say i was at home when my water broke.

WIth my first child my water didn't break...they broke it for me at the hospital...with my second, I was in bed and at about 11:30pm I felt this little pop and whoosh...my water broke...that's when the contractions really geared up

hmm you people got ripped off in the whoosh dept. I was in bed at 330am. It felt like someone was pouring a warm bucket of water into my bed. It was whooshing. I was flooded in about 10 seconds. I dribbled fluid all over the carpet, though most was running off my body, to the bathroom, and needed to sit on the toilet while the rest dribbled out. Sorry its detailed, but no mistaking if they broke or not. I was worried I was leaking in the previous weeks, HA I knew when they broke alright. My stomach was so much flatter after the water was out. Also what people dont mention is with every tightning or contraction during early stages of labour after they have broken, you get a good cup or so gush out. Its messy ! My only fear was waiting for pain instantly after they brake. I was in the shower getting ready to leave the house just petrified the pain would hit, but it didn't.

I gave birth to my 1st child this past July and when i was pregnant i was worried about that too along with a ton of other fears like what will contractions be like and will i be able to handle birth and ect.. Then when i had my First contraction at 2 am i just figured it was braxton hicks(false labor) and finally my fiance convinced my to go to the hospital at 8am when they were 5 mins apart and they never hurt really bad but i ended up getting the epidural any way when i was 5cm a. Birth was actually not too bad. And they broke my water for me but it sucked cause it just keep gushing out it didn't all come out at once like i thought it would so i had to put like a towel in between my legs and keep changing it but all in all it wasn't too bad and now i want to have another one in a few yrs!

i was in the midwives office, lol, or i wouldnt have made it there. my water broke on its own while in her office and she was 2 hours from my house. my labor was only 1 and a half hours! lol. with the second and third they broke it at the hospital, with the fourth it broke in bed. with the fifth he was an emergency c section so they did it. every time mine broke it was a whoosh! major whoosh! no mistaking what had happened. but just in case when i got closer to due i bought some oops pads and sat on those in the car so that if it happened in the car i was more prepared. as for walking, if your too worried you can get some pads with wings to wear for the end and it will help a bit, just in case but only like 10 percent of women start labor with water breaking. so i wouldnt worry too much. i hope mine doesnt break too publicly this time....lol.

with my first, I was at home. I stood up and all of a sudden it started comming. I thought I peed myself. When I went to clean myself, I realized it was my water. The funniest part was that it kept comming, and I didn't have any maxi pads, so my husband had to go knock on all our neghbor's doors asking for pads. My second child, I was at work. I worked in a nursing home and did a lot of heavy lifting. I was working with a patient when I felt a little trickle. I thought I peed myself again, so I didn't go to doctor until the next day. The best part was that it had caused me to start labor, but I didn't feel any of it. I was already 5cm with no pain. My third child, the doctor had to break at the hosp.

I was up and down restless all night. Was in bed and felt a little gush went to bathroom to check it out and it fully broke all over the bathroom floor. Just put a towel down. We got showers and headed to the hospital. I wasn't having contractions I could feel when my water broke. It was 5:45 A.M when it broke and our lil guy came into the world at 11:23 P.M.

Asleep....it was one o'clock in the morning. I woke up, went to the restroom, and back to bed. When I got up at six and took a shower I relised that my water broke in the middle of the night. It gradually comes out slowly. It's not like it all comes out at the same time.

It's just like water, I was in bed when my water broke and I had already started having strong contractions about a half hour before it happened. Personally my water gushed so it is possible for that to happen but everyone that i've talked to says that it just felt that they had peed there pants. The best advice I can give you is to just keep a heavy pad in your purse just in case.

With my first I had gotten up for the second or third nightly trip to the bathroom. As soon as my foot hit the floor, so did my waters. I was so confused and upset because I was sure I was peeing myself. My husband calmly rolled over and told me my water had broken. I took a shower, grabbed a sanitary pad and we were off to the hospital. My poor hubby had to clean up that puddle, but I don't recall a smell at all.

With my second my water didn't break until my first push...that one was like in the movies, a loud pop and water just gushed everywhere. My son was born about 3 pushes later.

I much preferred my second labor. Without all the waters there, my first labor was far more intense. Both were very worth it though. =)

My waters with my Daughter went in the back of a taxi, the taxi driver was really good though he wouldnt even take any money to pay to have his taxi cleaned. He even stopped my partner the next day outside the hospital to see how i got on. I even managed to walk through the hospital soaking i think once it happens u just dont care u go into mummy mode and all ur worried about is getting ur little baby into ur arms and trust me its all well worth it.

i was on my way to the bathroom i thought i had to pee... by the time i made it i felt a "snap" then the water just gushed right out. my husband said it sounded like i poured a large cup of water in the toilet. with in a few seconds of my water breaking i had very strang contractions that were 3.5 min apart, by the time i got to the hospital they were just over a minute apart and i was already 4 cm dialated... this all came with no warning either... hopefully this time around i will have a little more warning seeing how baby #2 supposedly comes faster

with my first my water broke after my shower and i thought I'd peed my pants because it gushed out so suddenly. I quickly sat on the toilet and realized it was my water, grabbed a clothe diaper and sat on that on the way to the hospital. With my other two my water had to be broken at the hospital. It's a warm gush/trickle of water that doesn't really smell. It smells like you, and slightly musky--but since you are used to your own smell you won't notice it.

I was at home when my water broke with my first child. I had just gotten out of bed that morning, but mine wasn't a gush or anything like that.. the baby's head was blocking most the fluid. And I was at the hospital with the second one.. i was actually about to go home, we thought it was a false alarm and i told my husband maybe if i went to pee i would feel a little better, as soo as i sat down to pee it was a huge gush... I've heard of the "drop a jar of pickles" too... good idea! (:

I was really glad that I had to have my waters broken in the hospital - I had about 3 times the normal amniotic fluid and mine gushed out - the doctor had to hop off the bed because it got him wet!! LOL Talk about embarassing! Your OB-GYN can tell you if you have a lot of amniotic fluid, but even if you do there's nothing you can do about it! Good luck :)

Haha, when my water broke I turned to my husband in bed and said "hey babe" he replies "yeah" "I think my water just broke" he says in the most calm way "ok". It took him a few seconds to register what was happening, and then he popped right out of bed and said "what do we need to do" and I said "go get me a towel so I can walk." So I too was soaking a towel on the way to the hospital. It felt so gross, plus my water was green so I was a little nervous, more than I would've been otherwise I think.

My water broke when I was sleeping in my bed at 1:30 in the morning. I had not been having any contractions and was barely dialated so it was a crazy deal. We found out that she had turned in-utero thus breaking the water and starting my labor, and also requiring me to have an emergency c-section. But, my story probably won't happen to you so don't freak out!

Haven't read all the responses (too many) but one thing to note is that IT DOES NOT STOP FLOWING... After your water breaks you will continue to leak fluid until you deliver your baby.

My broke at home on the toilet... and there WAS a "woosh" and it WAS bloody (not very common though).

My water broke at home as well, I had gotten up at 6am to put some wood on the fire (was a cold winters morning) and it just tickled out, I wasn't sure at first but it had no smell and was clear - contractions started about half an hour after this which helped me to know what was going on :)

For my oldest and first, I was at home just got home from work- thank goodness! my second one, I was at my mother-in-law's house and the last one was a schedule C-section because he was overdue one month. When I got to the hospital and they examine me before the C-section, the nurse said to me, Mrs. McLean, you have no amniotic fluid left for baby, we have to give you the fake one before you get anesthesia. Well the real story is, while inside the delivery room prepping for delivery, one of the nurse from the maternity floor came in to tell the other doctors and nurse that was with me good bye, turns out she was pregnant and leaving for maternity leave. While saying good bye to her friends, she says to my anesthesiologist, "I am so sad to leave, I am crying and even flooding the floors" Her water broke and she was just joking about it as if this is an everyday thing to her. Guess it's because she is a maternity nurse.....lol!

My water broke at home late at night on a weekend and I knew it was my water, not pee. It was a continuous , clear, small trickle. It did not smell. But I did not go to the hospital right away. I waited until the next day. I had a very normal delivery, but I had a hard time pushing the baby out, so the Dr. gave me something to make the contractions stronger. My back was hurting so bad during the labor.

Oh and I had to sit with a towel in between my legs on the way to the hospital, the nurses changed my towel like 3 times. I was told I had A LOT of fluid.

I was at home. 12:30 am, Valentine's Day, my husband worked overnight at Walmart. I had gotten up to use the bathroom and right when I was bending down to get back into bed it felt like I had peed myself. So I went back to the bathroom and it kept coming. When it finally paused long enough for me to get my cell phone, I called my husband, told him I thought my water broke and he needed to come home. ( I had been having preterm contractions since 31 weeks so he was a little unsure.) After I got off the phone with him, I called my stepmom, who was a nursing student with 3 (grown) boys of her own. And because I was alone, I had to clean up the mess....not that big of a deal for me. And when I got to the hospital, they checked that it was my water and not just a lot of pee. 16 hours later I had my son. My sister told me when she lost her mucus plug and thinking back, when I peed before it broke, I must have lost it then but didn't know because I was too tired to turn the light on.lol
Don't worry about where you are at when it breaks. It just means you are going to get to see your baby soon.

what if im sleeping and dont notice it?

mine broke when i was in the hospital.. i had been in labor for 18hrs.. so, i had fallen asleep.. THEN my water broke.. and i woke right up.. and seriously, RIGHT after it broke my daughters head started crowning.. so yeah, you'll notice it when you're sleeping.. your child's head might not start crowning, but you certainly will feel contractions.

With my first I got a slow leak 3 days before she was born and then it full on exploded while I was laying in bed at home. When I got to the hospital, the nurses called me a gusher because it was still streaming out of me after 2 hours. My second, my midwife broke it for me. My third, it broke as I pushed my son out. Those one will break at home since I'm having this baby at home.
