A good gardening book

Hi, I'm new to the community and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good gardening book. My husband and I just moved from a busy area in Florida to a very VERY small town in the Finger Lakes Region of NY. We had no room in Florida for much gardening other than herbs but here....we have a giant yard and plenty of room to expand our gardening skills. Next spring, we are planning on growing a pretty big garden but I want to ensure that we do it right. I'm looking for a book that will tell me the natural, chemical free basics (soil preparation, pest control, etc), basic care and pruning methods, as well as seed preservation. We've decided to keep our garden sort of minimalistic for the first year, just to see how well we do with the basics. I see us growing tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, I want to try my hand at collard greens (if they will grow up here?), maybe some lettuce, carrotts, garlic, onions. Definitely a variety of herbs. Now that it's getting chilly and winter is around the corner (the Florida girl shivers and almost begins to cry! LOL), I figure now is a good time to read up and prepare for the spring plant. Also, if anyone knows of any good floral gardening books, I'd really be interested in those too. Thanks :)

I am new here too. Hello! :-) I have recently started reading Square Foot Gardening http://www.amazon.com/Square-Foot-Garden... and I'm really liking it. I haven't yet tried any of the advice yet though, so... I've been gardening for three years in our VERY small backyard (I'm so jealous of your big yard!), and I'm eager to try out the ideas in this book this spring.
