Hey.. I'm a first time mom and just started giving my little girl Nestle rice cereal. I was wondering if anyone could tell me when to start giving her baby food in those little jars? She's 3 months on the 9th if that matters. Thanks in advance! =)

I was in the same situation, my son is now five months and I started him on jar baby food at about four months. When you think she is ready and is interested in the food on your plate she is probably ready for jar food. Good luck with everything, hope I helped!!

Quoting Marta:

It all depends on her needs, in my opinion. I know that the medical community at large feels that infants under 6months should be fed solely on formula and/or breastmilk. If you feel that she is ready for some foods try a little bit of apple sauce or other fruit sauces (one fruit at a time and give it a week before you introduce something else--just in case she has an allergic reaction you'll know what it was to.) And don't be too surprised if her poop changes colours with each new addition to her diet; carrots=fluorescent orange and peas=fluorescent green. It's really quite gross when it's your first diaper after solid foods. Just take your time with it and she'll gradually learn to love food!

I agree. When my son was 2 months old I actually started him on cereal. He was eating a can and a half of formula a day and that was way too much formula to be going through. He started getting interested in actual food and when I started him on cereal he started eating very well without any problems and then I started him on the jarred baby food when he was 2 and a half months. He did really good. There were a lot of flavors that he hated but I had him try them every few months. Sometimes it takes a lil bit. I did the same thing with my daughter. And her doctor actually told me that that was the best way to introduce them to actual food is to watch your baby's ques when they see you with certain things. Both my kids were off the bottle and breast milk early, and very healthy and have no food allergies.

if you have trouble with certain flavors, a way to slowly introduce the flavors is to make the rice cereal the way you usually do, and add only a spoonful or two of the new food to the mix; gradually replace bits of water with jar food. good luck!

talk to your baby's dr. They can give you an idea of when to start. Also, if your on wic, the nutritionists there can help. But play it by ear, and as the others have mentioned, start w/single foods, feed them the same food for 3 or 4 days in a row to watch for a reaction, also my suggestion is to start w/a vegetable. Some babies start w/the sweet fruits and then they dont like the veggies...good luck

My son got started on pablum at 3 months and babyfood at 4 months, he is really big for his age and my doctor had me start him early because formula wasn't enough to fill him up.

i'm pretty sure that the average age to start them on baby food is 4 or 5 months. you have to start kindly slow tho because she mite be a allergic like Jenifer said

Well....I can tell you that I started feeding my daughter cereal around 5 months. My pediatritian had me wait and introduce foods slowly, and one at a time, bc of reactions (sensitivities, or food allergies) and come to find out, she did have food allergies. We found out she was allergic to peas, and eggs, and there are quite a few baby foods with eggs in them. She also had a peanut allergy. My son is allergic to many foods too!
