Changes in sleep pattern and overfeeding

I am a 19 year-old single mother of 1, working full time. My daughter will be 5 months old on the 10th of this month. Since she was about 2 months old, she has only woken up once in the night to eat, and then sleeps well afterward, as long as she is in bed with me. But for the past week, she has been waking up every 2-3 hours wanting to eat. I was wondering if this is normal, or if maybe I should start her on a different formula (as I was unable to breastfeed). She has always eaten more than babies her age, but is very healthy. She eats cereal and baby food during the day just as I was instructed to feed her by my doctor, and I was also curious whether or not "overfeeding" her was possible. My mother has mentioned to me before that she thinks she is "too chubby" (she weighed 16lbs at her last check-up, and was 27in long). I don't really know what is and isn't "normal" for babies her age, and have no one to ask as my mother breastfed all of us and knows nothing about formula-fed babies. Our doctor says that she is just as healthy as any breastfed baby, so is it possible to overfeed? Should I be concerned about the change in her sleep pattern? Am I doing something wrong? If anyone has any thoughts or this has happened to them, please help.

Thanks for the comments everyone! Since I posted this, she has gone back to only waking up once in the night to eat. Thanks a lot :)

Well, I'll tell you what.. my son has always been a "chubby" baby and still is even though he runs around EVERYWHERE!! My husband and I were also chubby though =) I breastfed for 3 months, got an abscess and had to start formula. As they get older, their eating patterns do change considerably. I would talk to your doctor again and see what they say. I'm sure they will say it's a growth spurt, that's what htey told us Michael was doing at about that age. As long as your baby is active and doing the things that are normal for children that age, I don't see a problem with you feeding your baby as you are and as the doctor has specified. I'm sorry to say this, but your doctor is a doctor for a reason... is your mom a doctor?? I've had to tell my family and friends that a couple of times. Don't worry, you are doing what you need to do.. Just keep talking to the doctor and following their orders. =) They ultimately know what's best and will tell you if your child is overweight.

your baby does not sound too chubby at all. you can overfeed little babies and they throw the whole bottle up. but usually older babies will let you know when they are full. eating every 2-3 hours at night is not normal and the best way to break her of that is to just not feed her i know its hard when she cries but thats even what doctors say to do.i have a 3 mo old and work in a nursery hope i could help!
