How many ultrasounds do they do?

One to see the fetus at the first dr. visit, another around 5 months. Most women get 2, I got 5 because of complications during the last trimester.

I had 3 scans overall.

- my dating scan at 12 wks so confirm my pregnancy and my due date.
- anomoly scan at 20 wks to check for any complications/problems. It was during this scan they were able to tell me whether I was having a boy or a girl.
- a growth scan at 36 wks because my bump was measuring quite small and they wanted to check on her growth.

They generally do 2-3 ultrasounds. The first between 8 and 12 weeks, it is the dating scan. It gives a more accurate guide to your due date. The second one is around 18 weeks, this is to have a good look at the foetus. They check that it has all limbs, heart is functioning properly etc. During this scan they can also try to see if you are expecting a boy or girl.

During your last trimester, some Dr's like to do one last scan to check babies lungs, heart and size. It is harder for them to tell the sex of the baby this far along though.



With my personal experience I had my first at 9 weeks. Second at 11 weeks 5 days (threatened miscarriage), third at 19 weeks, fourth at 26 weeks (small for dates), fifth at 34 weeks (again small for dates), sixth at 37 weeks (sizing scan) and my last at 40 weeks... on my due date, they wanted to check bubs size and placental function.

I found out I was expecting a little girl at my 37 week scan.

They can tell the sex as early as 16 weeks. Some places won't tell you tho. I'm in Alberta Canada and they will tell if you sign a form, but over in BC they won't tell you.
I had two different types of ultrasounds. The normal one and then a 4D ultrasound (which is really neat). They can tell the sex from both types of ultrasounds.
1-3 is normal, my friend just had her 5th, but her fluid levels are low. Hope this helped :)

I'm in BC and they do tell you the sex here:)  I know when I was pregnant with my son they wouldn't tell you in my city (Kelowna) but you could go 45 mins away and they would.

My doctor told me that for a normal pregnancy they only do one ultrasound. I had one with my son and am pregnant now but will get at least 2 because I have to have a dating one.

im not sure i have an ultrasound every month but it could just be because shes a little underweight
if you want to know whether its a boy or a girl they have to check on the 3D ultrasound it doesnt show in the 2D ultrasounds due to low quality
&+ from what the doctor said they cant tell if its a boy or girl until about the 5th or 6th month

I had 2, but I think it depends on your doctor. The first was at my very first appointment, and the second was farther into my pregnancy to determine the sex of the baby. For the second one, they did a 4D ultrasound, which was SO crazy cool. I had a doctor's appointment every month, and then it turned into every two weeks, and then the last month I had one every week.

i had 4 or 5 with my son and 2 with my daughter. i was 19 weeks when i found out i was having a boy and i was 37 weeks [at birth] that i found out i was having girl. i did however, get an ultrasound with my daughter at 19w3d to find out what she was, but she was keeping it a secret. the day i gave birth to her i was scheduled to have an ultrasound, but gave birth instead.

well, i had one done at every single drs appt which i found out when I was about 5 weeks. so, I had one done at, 5 weeks, 9 weeks, 13 weeks, 18 weeks, 22 weeks, 26 weeks, 27 weeks(4d), 28 weeks(another 4d because she was to far in the uterine wall at 27 weeks), 29 weeks(because of the same problem at the 27 weeks 4d, and the 28 weeks 4d), 30 weeks, 32 weeks(because of braxton-hicks contractions), 34 weeks(again because of braxton hicks contractions), 36 weeks(because just checking the baby out), 37 weeks, 38 weeks(they told me the babies weight), 39 weeks(to double check her position). So I had quite a few done, and at each one except the 4d ones I had at least 4 pics from each ultrasound, the 4d ones I have 15 from the one at 27 weeks, the 28 week one I have 24 pics, then the one at 29 I had 48 pics, but I also paid for the 4d one to be done.

I had three done i think...the first at nine weeks and then at 20 which is when we found out the sex and then i had one the day before i had my son to check my fluid since i was a week late

Hi Ash, mostly they do 2, depending on your insurance. But when you hit a certain age they do more , 3-4 at least, that's for any signs of abnormatally. At 5 months you can have a 100% sex call, boy or girl. Good luck.

she has a lot of fluid and she had a misscarriage or something before so they wanna keep an eye on this baby.

i had 2.
a 12 week dating scan (i had mine at 11 weeks .. see how far along you are and make up a due date check babys developing as it should be and see how many babies there is)

and a 20 week anomaly scan (i had mine at 19 weeks ... check for any abnormalities with baby and usually you can find out the sex at this scan .. i did!)

i have had two ultra-sounds so far, and another one set for dec.2 to find out the sex. one at 7 weeks, one at 14 and my next one at 24 weeks it all depends on your age, and if your having complications, i have to go for a doctors appt. once a month, and thats normal, i would maybe have a talk with your doctor and ask him/her why you have only had one? congrats on the pregnancy!!! enjoy every moment of it!

it all depends on your pregnancy honey;; im three months pregnant and have had three already depends if you have complications or not and so on, usually 2 though from what i hear

I had about 10, one at about 7 wks 4 days to confrim the prenancy then another one at about 16wks, then another one at 21 (they found out I had a girl then) then a bunch more, my last one was when I was about 32 weeks along, I had complications with my pregnancies so they did alot to check the baby, and they all did normal scan's on me

I had... one at 8 weeks, one at 13, one at 15, one at 20, and one at 40. The one at 40 was only because I hit full term and the one at 20 was because I had complications with Kidney Stones. I think two or three is normal.

i had 2 scans which i think that is how many everyone is suppost to have. i had my first at 3 onths and then i had my next oneat 5 months and the 5 month scan was when i found out i was having a girl. they ae both the same scans aswell!
