My son is 2 1/2 months old... is he too young to be started on baby foods and cereal?

Yes it is way too early.
The baby food companies don't even recommend it until 4 months and all health organizations recommend 6 months or later. It used to be fashionable to pour pureed anything down a babies throat as early as you could get a spoon in their mouth, but we now know that is very unhealthy and can cause lifetime problems.
When your baby truly is ready he'll grab it off your plate and feed it to himself.

Its just wenever u feel the time is needed n also ok. my first daughter was eating solid foods by 5 mnths now my second daughter is 2 mnths old n ive been giving (building up) cereal in her bottles since she was a mnth. she had some reflux issues n the cereal helped weigh everything down so she wouldnt throw up everything. i just gave her alil pureed banana in with her cereal n formula bottle n she loves it. but be careful of food allergies i try to stay away from strawberries n honey n peanut based things. :-)

When my son was 2 m onths I started him on Farax. It is a rice cereal made for young babys. I would put a tiny bit in with his last bottle for the day and it helped keep him fuller at night and sleep longer.

Alot of people will say to wait untill so and so months old, but you know your baby and only you will know when he is ready.

You should do what you feel is right. A little at a time and build up is fine. Better than them always being hungry. All of my boys were hungry babies and all were started on solids early. between 2 1/2 to 3 months. All are fine. They are not obese, allergic to anything and they do not have dodgy digestive systems. Do what you feel your baby needs.

my daughter is also 2 1/2 months and about two weeks ago i began putting rice cereal in her formula bcz the formula alone didnt keep her full for longer than 40 minutes or so. i mix 1 tsp of rice in to 3 oz of formula and it keeps her full, she digest it fine and sleeps through the night now. but i dont plan to start her on solids until shes about 5 months

it isn't recommended that you start your baby on solid food that early. my mother started me around that age on cereal. she says its the best thing she ever did. the baby will sleep better at night and wont want to eat as often.

i am on a wic program where they give you free formula and cereal for infants. i was told that they can start cereals at 4 months, but no solids until 6 months.

it is recommended that u do not introduce solids until at least 5 or 6 months because there digestive system is to immature to handle it if u give solids to them to young u can damager there intestines and bowel

start him on some food... my daughter did and she is completely healthy a wonderful eater and VERY happy.... she doesn't eat too much now and she is almost 8 months!!!

My advice is go with your gut instincts!! i weaned my son at 2 1/2 months and now he eats everything!! but start with baby rice until about 3/ 3 1/2 months. try avoiding jars as they contain a lot of hidden sugr & salt..even the organic foods and once they like them..you have to wean them onto NORMAL foods which takes a longer period of time than just going for homemade foods first. i started giving my son pureed veg & fruit at 4months now hes on mashed foods like carrot&parsnip, cauliflower & cheese sauce, organic yoghurt & fruit.. all freshly made & frozen. i freeze about 2weeks worth of food every week so il never run out or if hes going away for the night. always cook with unsalted butter & full fat milk or his formula.
about their digestive systems some develop faster than other so EVERY child is different but the claims about health problems in the future all depend on the child too. my sister was exculsively breastfed for 9months then weaned..i was weaned at 3months..my sister has IBS .. i have no allergies or other medical problems to date!!

I started my last baby on cereal @ 2 months old. I would wait til yours is about 3-4 mnths for baby food. But I think cereal is great it fills their bellies up. Your baby will let you know if he's not ready.

I started my daughter on cereal when she was just over 3 months old but only because she was breastfed, would not take a bottle at all and my body wasn't producing enough milk so she was constantly hungry. however like everyone else says, talk to the doctor. they will probably say he is too young though.

Food starting isn't measured by age, rather by milestones. Generally, you should wait until between 4 and 6 months to start putting cereal in their bottles (Gerber cereals; not cereals in your house), depending on how fast your baby is developing. I started my daughter on rice cereal in her bottles in the morning at 4 months because she was already sitting up, holding herself up in the crawl position, and looking interested in my food when I ate (a cue her stomach is preparing to be able to digest). They go by whether your baby can sit assisted or unassisted, crawl, walk, or other big milestones like that. But either way, 2 and a half months is (even with those milestones) far too young for its digestive system to handle anything other than formula or breast milk. Wait until 4-6 months to start rice cereal (the lightest) and work your way to things like wheat, and oatmeal (again Gerber, not your cupboard kind) before you start mashing up baby foods.

i think its a little to early... but every baby is different... my son started solids at 4 months old but he was a huge baby to begin with and milk just wasnt doing it lol... ask your doctor... they say when your child is recognizing and wanting your table food they are ready to start solids... is your baby interested in your food?

You can introduce solids any time between 4 and 6 months if your baby is ready. Until then, breast milk or formula provides all the calories and nourishment your baby needs and can handle. His digestive system simply isn't ready for solids until he nears his half-birthday.

My daughter is barley two months old and she has been put on rice cereal for about 2 to almost 3 weeks now, and she is doing great! My doc put her on it and he said the only main reason they don't recommend it for younger babies is because you shouldn't put it in their bottle because they can choke and most babies can't eat off a spoon tll they are about 4-5 months old. my son is almost 3 months.instead of straight formula i put banana cereal in it...it makes it thicker & fills him up faster.that way he isnt going thru formula as fast.

i started giving my son baby cereal in his bottle at just about 2months.. he was still waking up in the middle of the night & he slept right through when i started giving him the cereal in his bed time bottle. i didnt start giving him baby food until he was 6 months most people start off at 4 months if they like.

YES .... you should talk to your doctor first babies shouldnt start eating cereal or food til at least 4 months..... they have to be able to hold their head up and be able to refuse the food first before anything ... talk to your doctor because it is probly too early

My pediatrition told me not to start anything until 4 months because it is harder on thier digestive system, and i agree with her and he is 6 months now and soing great! hang in thier girl, it's a long ride :)

I have 4 children and all of them were started on rice cereal around 2 1/2 to 3 months, with their weights formula was no longer able to satisfy them. I did consult my peditrician the first time and he did recomend that if you are feeding at least every 2 hours and anywhere from 6 to 8 oz at a time then it is time to start them on at least 1/2 oz of cereal 2 to 3 times a day, needless to say the jar food can start to be introduced at 4 months

Im a expecting parent, but yes honestly, I think that it is too early to start, because i have younger sibilings and they were still being bottle fed with milk, and didnt start eating baby food untill they were 5 months and up, but they still had to drink baby milk.

No it's not to early to start. You must start off with a small pinch of cereal in his formula. Then see how he respond. His stomache will be full. He won't want a bottle as often.

Doctors usually say more into the 5th month for baby cereal...other foods would be hard on the baby's digestive system.

i started my son on baby cereal and formula at 2 month. he started on 2 baby spoon fulls a day and worked up from there. and it is not proven that starting them out on food early causes early allergies. that has never become a proven fact. and if you wait too long to start them out they can become too dependant on their bottle.

always ask ur doctor first. my son was 5 months when the doctor told us to start him on baby food and cereal. it all depends on his weight ans what his doctor thinks. just always ask the doctor before you change anything.

What Erica has said is true, however some babies do need food before 6 months. I would speak with ur doc before giving anything. my son was always hungry and was a really big boy and i couldn't produce milk fast enough for him and he was started on solids at 3 months. he was my second tho and he was only fed farix (i can't spell lol). But like i said, erica is right so if u do think ur bub needs more, speak with a doctor.

HI Tiffany, I remember thinking this same thing with my first baby 9 long years ago when I was 16. The answer is Your little man is still far too young to start on solids, They recommend waiting until at least 6 months because a babies digestive system is too immature to digest more than milk properly until then.

Also if you introduce solids too early there is a higher risk of allergic reaction
