I am in my first "real" year of homeschooling my son. He is in 1st grade, just learning the basics right now. He is extremely busy, and very kinesthetic. I am having a hard time thinking outside the box for him. He has been really struggling with attention to do worksheets, and sit-down activities. I KNOW I need to change it up, and figure something out that teaches to his kinesthetic/need to move personality, but I am out of ideas. Basically, one idea will work for 1-2 weeks, then he gets bored of it. We don't use a curriculum, and can't afford one at this point... I just create my own materials, worksheets, etc. I am looking for ideas for games and activities that are hands on, for both math and reading/spelling. I am also interested in computer games and activities. I have considered Jump Start 1st grade. Has anyone else used that program? Is it worth it?

my son acts the same way...although i didn't know thats what it was called. I have to make it a challenge for him. Set a time limit for each subject, for some reason that keeps him focused enough to get that subject done. I also found this website with some ideas. I used blocks, beans, cereal things like that, things my son could touch to help teah him math. Here's this website, hope it is helpful to you. Let me know if I can be of any help.

I have used the jump start programs before and my girls loved them. We weren't home schooling at the time they were just bored with the work they were doing at school and needed a little extra stuff to do! It helped them a lot!!! They ended up in advance and similar classes when they got in middle school. It could be that you son is able to do some more advance work (a higher grade level) you could try it and see! My oldest daughter would get bored at school and wouldn't do her work and would get up and walk around the room! we thought she was add but found out she was bored with doing the same work over and over after she learned it she wanted to learn something else, something new! I also used the work books that you can find at most stores like Wal-mart, in there book department. they have some that goes from pre- k to 3rd grade! The good thing about home schooling is you can move at your own pace! so just relax and enjoy this time with your son! They grow up very fast!!! God will help you think of ways to teach him!!! Y'all are in our prayers!!! By the way my daughter is now 21 married and with a baby of her own now! She graduate in top of her class (strait A student) and has no problem working @ a job. Hope this helps and is encouraging to you! God's Blessings!!! Chandra

don't stess yourself and don't push him...(counterproductive)
you might try setting the timer for 15 min. for one activity, then again for a romp outside, and again for a worksheet, again for______.....
I don't know if you could get a teacher helper book from your library that has games you photocopy and cut out the cards, etc for....Like a game board in the shape of an A for long a words, etc.
Also try using the sign language alphabet...
(I heard of a child jump roping during spelling class and acing the test for the first time)

I've used jumpstarts... I much prefer Reader Rabbit!!!!!!!!! [and later cluefinders]
(much more fun and goal oriented (obtain these peices from each activity to accomplish ____ [like all the things that are missing for the play], rather than browsing [click on any elevetor button you want, eventually the child has a few favorites and doesn't try the "hard" stuff.])
