I would like a good history curriculum for my 6th, 3rd, and kindergartener. I am interested in History through Literature approach but I am not sure which one to go with. This is my first year of homeschooling and I don't want to be too overwhelmed, but I would like to add more reading to our day. I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks,

I really enjoy the Bob Jones for 3rd, 4th,and 5th History so far. They have "notebook" activity pages so the info gets reinforced. They are more in depth than some text books I've seen. I used the Christian Liberty Press for K, a nice intro to the pilgrims, Columbus, etc. (and Abeka for 2nd...to me- flashy pics, vague facts).

For between K and the 3rd gr. BJU now, I just use books like "Shhh We're Writing the Constitution", "Where was Paul Revere on the 29th of May?", age apropriate ones on Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, etc. We graduated to "Tom Jefferson" in Childhood of Great Americans series.

And we definately research anything of interest to them.

I really enjoyed The Story of the World with my kids. It is interesting and good for multiply ages. There are a ton of activites and enrichment activities to choose from.

I love Diana Waring's history. I am using it for a 9 year old as well as 10th and 12th. There are activity books for the younger ones and lots of reading suggestions for all ages. There are also built in activities for all learning styles so I don't have to be quite so creative. Good luck making a decision. I will be praying.
Also, remember that you can always try something this year and do something else next year. You might also try finding a local support group and checking out the material that people around you have before you buy.

we LOVE Sonlight! We can use one curriculum for all three girls (who are 18 mos apart) and have been doing this for the last 3 years! It is literature based and wonderful.

We have used Sonlight over the years. It was okay but I was never able to coordinate all of my children to learn together. (Some people can, but just not me) We used Abeka this year for my youngers (7th, 4th and K) but scrapped it before Christmas because the text approach is just not for us. Too many kids at too many levels. We are looking into Tapestry of Grace for the rest of this year. My oldest is finishing up SL in the next week or two and with TOG, they can all learn together, just each at their own level. It includes: history, literature, comp/writing, lapbooking for the youngers, hands-on-activities for all ages, and more. It looks like what I have been searching for all of these years! Check it out at tapestryofgrace.com and see what you think!

Karen,
I am currently using a history based unit study curriculum by Christian Novel Studies. It uses historical novels (Christian based) as well as The Light & The Glory for Kids as the main texts. There are lessons for every subject (reading, writing, geography, science, art, etc). The only thing we get outside of that is the math...though there are some math lessons in there as well. My three older girls are using it right now (ages 13, 11, & 9) They have suggestions for younger kids and non-readers as well. Most of the books that go with the study I have found at our local library or state libraries network. My girls have really enjoyed the stories. The first year is from Columbus thru the Civil War. The second year is the Civil War until 9/11. You can go to www.christiannovelstudies.com and check out their unit study and the whole scope and sequence for the study. ;) Oh..and welcome to the homeschool community!!
