13 month old throwing tantrums. Help!

My daughter is 13 months old fixing to be 14 months. She has been throwing tantrums when I tell her no. Take things away from her she is not supposed to have or play with. She throws food on the floor. She is also starting to hit when you try to take things away from her or when she gets mad at you. I have tried spanking her hands but this seems to have no effect. She will cry for a bit and walk off but later on she will go right back to what she was doing. I am at a loss of what to do with her. I try to be patient but its very hard. Taking care of a toddler and being 20 weeks pregnant with our 2nd child. If anyone has any ideas of how to stop this or minimize this problem I would love to hear them!! Thank you so much in advance.

Well she's hitting you when you're taking something away because you're hitting her. It's hard to teach a baby not to hit when that's what you do in response to the behavior you don't want. Unfortunately she's at the age of exploring and you're going to have to do a lot of baby proofing and redirecting.

I understand you're tired but Alison is 100% correct that you need to adjust your expectations. She is still a baby regardless if there is another one on the way. In the coming months you're going to need a lot of patience.

Unfortunately, this really is part of her development. Spanking may just aggravate the problem. She doesn't have the ability to manage her emotions or the self-control to stop herself from doing what she knows is wrong.

I find that by changing my expectations towards my children, most of the frustration dissipates. 13 months is still a baby, whether or not you've got another one on the way. Remember that she did not ask for a sibling and be careful not to expect her to grow up before her time.

Be consistent. Be patient. Be thankful for your strong-charactered child.
