Hi All

This is my very first post and as you can see from my title...my husband and I are looking for some ideas.

Our beautiful boy is such a character in the day, always generally very happy and doing the normal things a 14 month old boy does, however...his night time sleeps are really ALL OVER THE PLACE!!

He goes sometimes a whole night with just the 1 wake up, but more frequently he has been waking up to 5 times a night and sometimes one of those wake ups can last for an hour or two, before he settles back down to sleep.

We have tried the CIO method...it didnt work, he would get so worked up and throw up. He enjoys the cuddles from either his daddy or mummy and we love giving him them, however we are tiring and really want him to get his sleep as well as ours.

He has a dummy which he uses ONLY for sleep, and we have no issue with it. We also play him some soft music and due to teething more recently we have used some medication all of which will assist with any pain associated.

I am really looking forward to hearing what you wonderful mothers have to say...

Thank you in advance

Jackie (Xavier's mother)

We have a similar issue when he realizes he has lost his pacifier. Luckily this doesn't happen often.

It sounds like you are doing all of the right things. It may just be a phase. I would probably suggest not running in at the first moment he cries (it sounds likely from your post that you don't anyway), as that could encourage the behavior. I would also try to limit the time to just the initial cuddles to get him calmed down, then maybe an abbreviated bedtime routine to transition him back to sleepy time, instead of keeping him up the hour or two.

Good luck.

Just a thought about the dummy... my nephew used one for night, too, and one day my sister-in-law said, "This weekend we're taking the soother away." I was shocked, because I didn't even know he used a soother, and what's the problem anyway? She said that he kept waking up at night because he had lost the soother and couldn't find it again.

So they did it and he still doesn't sleep through the whole night every night, but he's better than he was. (he's 17 months old)

Other people I know put several soothers in the crib so that it's easy for the kid to get his hands on them in the night.
