Hi Guys,
Our 15 month old is trying to give up a nap which we should expect. The problem is that he wants to keep his morning nap - opposite of what "the average" toddler does. He likes to go back down by 9am after waking between 5:30-6:00am (ugh).

Didn't have this problem with my older one as she was more textbook in regards to napping. Should we just go with it or should we force him to stay up for a mid-day/early afternoon nap? My dilemma here is that I have to keep him up until I pick my daughter up from pre-k at 12:30. He can't even get into his bed until 1:00pm. It's tough.

Anyone have a similar problem? If so please share tips!

Thanks so much for reading!

I am in precisely the same scenario - 15 month old waking at 5-6am latest, wanting to nap at 9:30am, refusing naps and just getting angry from 4pm-7pm when he finally goes to bed. We also have the pre-K dilemma for my older child. So far I've not found any solution, I'm just dealing with it. It can't last forever, right. My older child did exactly the same thing too.

Quoting Wanda:

My son's the same way. He goes to bed at 8pm is awake again between 6:30-7 am, plays a bit, has breakfast and then wants his nap around 9:30 -10am. It's rare that he takes an afternoon nap anymore. I tried to switch him to an afternoon nap but it didn't work so I let him nap his way. Although he gets cranky close to bedtime (what kid doesn't), it seems to be what works.

Why do you have to keep your son up? Can't he get in a short nap before you get your daughter? If he gets a short nap in the morning he may take a short nap in the afternoon as well.

Hi Wanda,

I have tried to give him a short am nap but it pushes his afternoon one too close too dinner. Then he wakes at 5 no fail. I figured out he was getting too much day sleep and so far it appears to have been the case. I am now doing the morning one and just letting him sleep as long as he needs. He is awake a good 7 hour stretch in the afternoon but he is happy enough and I am just going with it as you all have suggested. Thanks so much for responding!

My 14mo sleeps until 10:00 & goes back down for a nap around 1:30-3:30. He has always been a good sleeper. He even goes to bed at 8:30!

Wow Brittany! Aren't you living the dream! So good for you!

My youngest has just turned one and only has one nap during the day, shes in bed 7.30-8pm and up anywhere between 6-7am she goes down around 11-11.30, just remember all kids are different maybe try and push it back to 10am or if he's not too grumpy come 5-6pm just let him go--he'll decide what he wants!!

My little boy is the same age. He goes to bed between 6.30 and 7.30pm depending but wakes up at 5am. I let him have a morning nap about 9ish and he sleeps for a couple of hours. I find this works for us. Good Luck :)

Yup. My 14mo is doing the same thing. She wakes about 6-7am and then goes back down between 10-11. She is no longer taking her afternoon 2-3 nap. Not sure why she switched up but it doesn't bother me... other than she is REALLY cranky by bedtime. Good luck!
