My almost 2 year old son does not say a distinguishable word. He "speaks" in his own language that noone can understand. He does, however, understand everything we tell him. I have two older girls who developed fairly quickly so I don't know if that is just the difference between boys and girls or if I need to worry about something else being wrong. It drives me crazy thinking there may be something wrong.

My son did not want to talk very much at all and got frustrated when he wanted something and I didn't know what it was. I taught him some signs just some basic ones like eat, thirsty, milk, more, please thank you. and it worked alot. He also started talking quickly afterwords. I would always say the word when I signed it and he started to do the same. You could try it with your 2 year old who is not talking. It might help. And also talk to you pediatrician about when he should start speaking because every child is different and the best person to know is his doctor.

my son is 2 and a half and im having the same problem. he says a few words like daddy, car, ball, tickle and diego. he just started saying mum about 4 days ago.my son was born at 30 weeks so i think that has alot to do with it as well. hes had to go to developmental appts and i had his hearing checked, all turned out fine. its still a concern of mine that hes not talking as well as my friends kids. speech therapy sounds like a good idea and im going to look into it. and like kim said i think girls start doing things alot sooner as well, but i would definately talk to his pcp about your 2 year old not talking.

I'm in the same boat as you. My son will be 2 in 2 months and doesn't say any words that I can decipher. I sometimes think he's trying to say some things. Boat, car, tap and pop, for instance, but it's not intelligible. I talked to my doctor about it and he said the first course of action is to rule out any hearing loss (which I doubt it is, because like you, he understands very well).

I've read in a parenting email that I get that children who gesture and point a lot tend to take a slower time in the talking department. Personally, I think that my son is too interested in the mechanics of things to be all that interested in talking. He loves to take things apart and put them back together. He's an ace at puzzles. He can put his ABC puzzle and his number puzzle (up to 20) together in seconds flat.

If you're really worried about your 2 year old not talking, talk to your doctor about it. He may need speech therapy or he may just need more time.

Calm down honey, boys tend to be slower in this category compared to girls anyway. How much older are your girls and do they engage him in conversation or any kind of play? If not, try to find another mommy who has a boy around his age or go to the playground and have him interact with other children there. Usually when toddlers are surrounded by kids in the same age group or a little younger, their speech development grows in leaps and bounds. If you are genuinely worried about your 2 year old not talking, and your son has not yet gone for his 2 year well child check-up, then mention this to your doctor. He will most likely examine his ears and check reactionary response. But speaking from personal experience, my son is almost 3 and is just now putting together 2-3 word sentences. His ears are fine, he is not autistic and has no developmental problems. He just kept his words to himself until he had a younger brother. Now his speech patterns are growing in leaps and bounds. My advice...trust your intuition and your doctor's expertise, you'll know what's right for your child.

My son was the same way. But soon after he turned 2, he started to say more and more things. I was worried as well about my 2 year old not talking. I would bring it up when you take him to his 2 year well check appointment. Every child is different, and it just might be that he is "taking it all in" (like mine), or it seems that boys have less to say then girls. We are by nature "talkers", and boys by nature are "doers"...so he might just not have much to say yet, as he is busy learning from what he sees and hears. Try not to stress over your 2 year old not talking (I know,,,It's easier said then done), but definitely ask his pediatrician. My daughter developed much faster then her little brother, but they are both very smart, they just learn in different ways. Hope this helps...Kim

My nephew did the same thing he could only say basic words. His Mom decided to take him to speech therapy. It helped him a lot.
