i have a daughter who just turned 4, she is a late talker, now she is talking 4-5 words together. she goes to a speech therapy school, there is improvemet in her. now the next issue is she dont want to write alphabets and numbers, she finds all excuses to get away from it . she is very stubborn .. its not like that she cant write, i think she dont want to... she is in preschool , and will go to kindergarten in sep 2013.. should i be concerned a lot.. or wait and watch.

I am a mom of a soon to be 6 yr old. I just left the school for a meeting about his intervention strategy. He was also a late talker and is in fact dealing with special needs. From what you have explained about your daughter you are already on the right track...have you tried getting workbooks and games that push for those fine motor skills to come out? In either case it sounds like something to watch but by mbps means should you be alarmed...I would definetly push for it to be ruin as opposed to a chore to deal with her excusses for not trying but either case I am sure she isfine.

I'm a stay at home mom now but I was an elementary teacher, and was a preschool teacher. I would say "don't worry too much about it!" You are getting her speech therapy, that is the most important thing. In the meantime - make writing fun! Write with her finger in pudding on a paper plate, write in the sand with a stick, or put paint in a sandwich bag (zipped and taped shut) and write with a finger on it. My son (3 1/2) has the leap pad "scribble and write". It's about 15-20 dollars and he loves it. The pad lights up dots to show them where to put their pencil and what lines to make, then they trace over it. The lights go away and they can see what they did. There are games and stuff so he likes doing it. You're getting her help, she'll get more in kindergarten if she needs it. Hope that helps!

My son at 4 could barely write his name, he didn't even hold a pencil or crayon properly when he was in preschool. He didnt have any delays but his fine motor skills weren't that great. Is she required to write letters and numbers in preschool? What do her teachers say? I would be more concerned if she didn't recognize letters and numbers.

If you really want to work on her writing I would try and make it more of a game then sitting down and saying draw an 'A'. The first month or two at kindergarten were dedicated to learning to write all the letters properly and learning the sounds they made.

Why don't you start a rewards chart with her? Make it fun to write and turn it into something positive?
