I started "going green" about a year ago or so mostly because of the toxic chemicals I found out about in my cleaning products.  Other ways I try to save is by replacing shower heads with water saving ones, re-use paper bags or use my own shopping bags, I try to do laundry with a full load, I use coupons for as much as I can, I joined a shopping co-op that offers discounts for bulk orders so a group of us get together and shop for what we need, meeting the requirement and getting the discount.  I get all my cleaning & personal care products from a "green" manufacturer and save money buying wholesale, I turn off lights when not in the room, turn thermo settings to low and on high for AC during the summer,  Cook in bulk and freeze leftovers, started to do clothes swapping with friends and so much more the list could go on.   Everyone should go green, not just because of the economic times, but because of the health of our families and our planet.
