I took both mine at 2 so they had plenty of time to get used to what happened at dentist before they had to do anything much. First few visits my dentist just made a game out of counting teeth etc, My 5 yr old is now happy to go, sit in chair, have teeth looked at etc.

My pediatrician, told me it is two - since that is when they really start to eat solid foods and should be taught the importance of brushing...

I have always been told 2yrs. old. I worked in a dental office for a short time and that is what I heard. Hey, its okay if they scream too b/c the dentist is able to look into the mouth! :)

Well my father is a dentist and he said the best age for a checkup is 3, but they can't do much until 4 or 5 if there is anything wrong with there teeth. The reason is they'll need to sit still and listen.
If you notice something wrong in your child's mouth or teeth, doesn't matter what age, take your child in right away.
