It's difficult to find the balance between being cautious without being too much or a worrier or over reacting but at the end of the day, he's your son and you know him better than anyone so if you don't think something is right then get it checked out. Is it seeming to bother him at all? Like does he seem ill, is it effecting his sleep or eating or energy levels etc?

My daughter was put on Zopenex for severe chest congestion that she could not get rid of. It was in the form of a breathing treatment! It worked wonders. I agree with Julie. You know your baby better than anyone. If he is not well...take him back to the doctor.

OMG Tracy-Ann this sounds EXACTLY like my two year old.!! if you see this I'd love to hear the outcome as I see this was posted back in 2009... My son STILL has this crackly chest cough I'm concerned and have been most of his life.. we've had him tested for various things including cystic fibrosis etc but its all clear, they've done testing for asthma but neither the treatment or preventive are making a difference..

I'm in Australia.. I'm thinking of going interstate for answers, the paediatrician here in my state can't even help..

My son had a pretty bad chest congestion the last time he was sick. I was really worried about it and took him to the dr. He doesn't have asthma but my husband has a history of it. The dr gave him a liquid form of Albuterol. It cleared it right up and he's been fine since. You could ask your dr about that.

I wouldn't be happy with that, he's only 2 years old. Would it be possible for you to go to a different doctor?

Hi Tracy-ann, have you been to the GP? You should have him checked out for asthma maybe, especially if the coughing is mainly at night. Julie
