DS is doing well sitting on the potty & I'm noting at what times he sits as well as doing anything else. He can hold his pee for quite awhile (2-4 hrs!!), stays dry during naps (yay!). But he has yet to actually pee IN the potty. I put him on the potty every hour or so (I was doing every 20-30 minutes but it seemed silly after realizing how long he was holding his pee). But when he pees his pants, it's usually 10 minutes or so after sitting on the potty. Any suggestions to help him register that pee-pee goes IN the potty? Thanks mamas!

It takes time, just be patient. My son was the same way. I started awarding him with stickers he could put on a posterboard evertime he did go. He was about 2 1/2 when he startes. He's 3 now and is doing great except at night, i still put him in a diaper. THere are times when he is too busy playing and will have an accident. I never punished him for accidents, I just showed over excitement every time he did go to the potty and he really liked that. Good luck and remember it takes a long time. I would say a good 4 months atleast.

Thx for all the great responses, mamas! He really doesn't drink liquids too much - I even resorted to chocolate milk! A few sips & he's done. I'll pick up some KoolAid mix & add that to some water & see what he'll drink.

He's been in underpants only for the afternoon, so we'll see where that goes. I'm slowly accepting that this could take awhile since it appears to be a control thing for him rather than just "learning" where the pee pee goes. Hopefully I'll have a success story in the next few days! :)

I would push fluids so he's going more.  Stop having him sit on the potty.  Follow him around so you catch him in the act.  Also just have him in a shirt and undies.  As soon as he starts going say, "oh yuck, you need to put your pee in the potty," and rush him to the potty.  Just keep doing this over and over until it clicks.  It should click in a day, two at the most.  If it doesn't then he may not be ready.  He'll get it.  Remember, lots of juice and water.  The more he has to go the more chances you'll have to train.  Good luck.

I had the same problem with my eldest daughter. She regressed when i had my youngest so we had to start again with her. I put her straight onto the toilet and each time she even sat on it she was praised so much. If she did pee then she got more praise and a small reward like stickers or a sweet etc. I also found that if she kept having going in her pants on purpose i left her in them wet for a while and she soon realised that going on the loo meant no wetness!! Hope this helps x x

It really just takes time... at least more time than just four days. Our two and half year old son just got it. First, we had the potty in use all day. We had it in the living room and kitchen during breakfast and lunch. We did our "lesson" plans, read books, played with play dough, any and everything that required sitting. It may sound a little extreme, but he spent everyday for a week during our normal activities all the while sitting on the potty. Everytime we went to dump the liquid filled potty pot, we talked about how great it was to become a big boy, we gave small treats and much praise. He picked it up pretty quickly with minor accidents every now and then. I hope this helped a little and best of luck to you, it is a very exhausting feat for parents to do but don't stop your daily outings just because you are pottying... it may lead to only being able to potty at home. Take care and would love to hear of your progress...

it sounds dumb but just take him every so often and if he has a accident ...then so be it....he will catch on......and after awhile....he keeps wetting in his pants he will get it

HI Vicki, I am not an expert at all in this matter. I am just starting to potty train my son as well, his going to be 2 soon. I found out that the more that i took him to the potty the less he would go in the potty. Don't get me wrong i still had to take him but as soon as he started aiming at the potty i made a big deal, such as saying pippi in the potty, pippi in the potty. Before all the cheering what i did was turn him away from the toilet and let him hear a glass of water being poored into the toilet so that he would get familiar with the sound and know that that is the sound its suppose to make. Hope u can find my comments usefull
