We have a cat that we have had since our son was born. My son (5 years old) adores this cat, every morning and night he has to hug and kiss the cat goodnight. When we returned from vacation I noticed out kitty had lost a significant amount of weight. We took him to the vets and the vet feels as long as he is not in pain, still eating and drinking just to give supportive care. Over the weekend the cat hasn't been eating and minimal drinking. I am thinking it's time to put the cat down (has major cardiac issues) how did you explain it to you little ones

Gently. Option one: You explain that kitty is quite old and quite sick and it is time for her to go to heaven. Let him kiss and cuddle one last night. Let a little time pass and leave quietly with the cat. You don't want him to think if you leave with mom you aren't going to bring her back. If he asks you just say kitty has gone to heaven. If you feel sad, it is ok to show it. You can tell him you miss kitty too. Another option is to not tell him in advance and just tell him she has gone to heaven, that she was old and sick and that is what happens when we are old and sick. The whole putting to sleep is too complicated for this age and may result in him being afraid to go to sleep. I'm sorry!
