My daughter had a string of night terrors for months. They would happen two or three times a week. I read as much as I could about them and also spoke with my doctor. I learned that you are supposed to let the terror take its course, keep your child safe so that they don't hurt themselves. When the terror was over, she would go right to sleep. The doctor assured me that she doesn't remember the terror, or even that she had one. When I tried waking her, they got worse. She would throw herself around and I feared she would hit her head or something. It was one of the hardest things to watch as a parent. I would kneel by her bed, in the dark, tell her I loved her and held my arms out in case she wants to come near me (typically wouldn't) and after 3-5 minutes it would be over. She is over them now.

My 3 year old son screamed every night for months. Doctor said it was night terror or nightmares. He told me to give 4 drops of Rescue Remedy to my son every night before bedtime. Since he is using the drops, no night terror or nightmares.

Okay, this one is SO FRUSTRATING, isn't it?  What I have done, and still do (mine is 3), is if I can't get him to wake up, which is usually never, I take him into the bathroom and either splash cold water on his face, or I have even gone as far to put him under the shower faucet.  Please don't think this is crude or mean, but it really does wake them up, and stops the screams.  I have also been to the doctor about them, armed with video tape evidence, and he prescribed an anahistimine (i know i messed that word up), and it seemed to help.  It is perfectly safe, and allows them to be in a slightly deeper sleep.  He WAS having them almost every other night, but after the doctor, it has been well over a month, and he does NOT wake up groggy.  I hope this helps, cause it can be very frustrating and leave you feeling so helpless.  Am I right?  Good luck!
