My daughter just turned 2 and has white flakes on her hair, and she is constantly itching it. I just noticed today she has sores on her head. Just wondering if you had any thoughts on what it was and how to treat it. Maybe a special shampoo. By the way i know it isn't lice i have seen lice and this is flaky and bigger than lice. thanks!

Try using an all natural shampoo and conditioner - you can get them from health shops plus puting a natural oil like coconut / olive oil etc on her scalp and leave for few hrs or over night then wash out this seems to help too (can leave her hair a bit oily still after washing tho). My eldest daughter had the same problem when she was younger this helped! Also if it is a type of eczema I've been looking into Castile soaps and goats milk soaps and they're supposed to help too! Wishing you good luck!

It wont be cradle cap unless she has always had it. She may have developed just a flaky scalp, My daughter has a dry scalp which becomes itchy, the more they scratch the more they itch. My daughter had very bad cradle cap as a baby and they differ in appearance. Best thing for dry flaky scalp is to get some almond oil from health shop and mis with a little water and rub into scalp. Obviously not too much as it will make her hair oily just the scalp.

Hope that works for you.

Olive oil. Trust me. Put it on an hour or two before bath time (it will protect the area from drying our further which agrevates the itchiness and just perpetuates the problem).

Also, you don't have to use shampoo everytime you bath her. Just warm water. Soaps strip moisture away from the body. My daughter still likes to wear half her food, but because of her eczema we're really cautious with the soaps. We haven't had to use the steroid creams shampoos. (btw read the label on the shampoos...some are really bad for the eyes).

It may be a form of eczema. My son has it in his head. We use Selsun blue and I also use sulfur 8 on his scalp at night. It has cleared up a bit. I only use the sulfur 8 at night because it does have a smell to it. Don't pick at it and try to get her not to scratch is because it will spread it and make it worse. Good luck.

HA! My 3.5 year old has that too. She also had bad cradle 'crap' as I call it-lol.
I've been alternating shampooing with conditioner to moisturize the scalp, works some. Jajoba oil massage is good too. She doesn't itch too much but when I first noticed it a couple months ago, there were big sores I carefully picked away-no bleeding, just flaky bits. Weird. My oldest never had this but he's a boy, much less hair. I have yet to see a ped for this. I think it's minor and weather related as we moved 6 mos ago from Sunny Cali to Seattle, WA. Let me know what you find out. Jajoba oil is pretty inexpensive at Trader Joes of all places btw. Good luck!

You could try Vitamin E oil. This is what I used on my kids when they were infants and had cradle cap. Rub it in her hair just before you shampoo her hair in the bath. But maybe you should take her into the Dr... it could be Eczema.

My son's pediatrician told me to use dandruff shampoo for my son's cradle cap. He said that it's actually a milder shampoo than johnson's.
