Hand foot and mouth disease

I just got a call from my sister-in-law. Her 2 year old son has been teething something fierce, all miserable and not eating and gums swollen. This evening she went to the walk-in clinic, and it turns out he has hand, foot, and mouth disease. Apparently it's very contagious but once you get it you're set for life.

Dr Google isn't really helping me today. Does anybody know a bit more about it, or have good websites to direct me to? My 2 year old played with hers all Sunday morning and again this morning. They're past the licking-everything stage, but they did share snacks from the same bowl.

So I wonder if he'll get it, and what about me? I'm pregnant. Is it bad if I get it? How long and how bad was it when your children had it?

Thanks in advance for any personal anecdotes or home remedies you have to share.

My 6 year old got really sick and that's what the doctor thought she had eek! But thank God it was just a flu.

Thanks, it says 3-5 days for infection after exposure, so I'm getting kind of hopeful that everything will be fine. :) (we're at 4.5 days with no symptoms... he's raging hungry and quite cheerful)
